Honoring the veterans at Columbiana Cemetery

To the editor: Have you driven through the Columbiana Cemetery recently? If not, please do. You will see the almost 800 American flags that have been placed on the veterans’ graves who served our country. How do the flags get there? Volunteers make time to place the flags, straighten markers and replace markers that have been damaged. This year the American Legion Post 290 had the Boy Scout troop that the Post sponsors — along with some of their leaders — help with this important duty along with approximately 5 adults from the Post. A total of 800 flags. Do a few get ...

Memorial Day message: We will never forget

To the editor: There have been moments in the 38 years of my military career that will forever be etched in my memory. None of them are more memorable than the day in 2012 when I stood on an airport ramp while the flag-draped caskets of three of our fallen Ohio Army National Guard Soldiers were escorted off the airplane. Emotions ranged from anger to sympathy for the three heroes whose lives were cut short while serving their country. The Ohio National Guard has experienced the loss of 15 men since the global war on terrorism began after 9/11. These patriots were fathers, husbands, ...

Another point of view on the Crestview School District

To the editor: Real Support, but in a Different Direction…. I too am a life long resident of Crestview School District and I have two children that currently attend the school. I also want what’s best for the children of the area, the community and Crestview School District. However, I disagree with signing a blank check for $43 million and handing it over to an administration which has proven that they are not capable of making fiscally sound decisions. Furthermore, I am disappointed in the lack of transparency regarding the facts surrounding this project. The current school ...

Encouraging support of Beaver Local Levy

To the editor: Voters in the Beaver Local School District will see a renewal levy on the May 7 ballot that is critical to maintaining current programs and operations. It does not increase taxes. The 4.61-mill emergency operating levy would generate $1.2 million annually for five years. These funds are used for day-to-day operations, including transportation, personnel, utilities and supplies. Without these monies, the district would need to make drastic changes, including reductions in programs and staffing. Supporting your local schools is a worthy investment that builds ...

Urges support of the Crestview School District

To the editor: As residents of Crestview School District for over 40 years, it’s always been impressive how our rural community has stepped up in support of all fundraisers, attendance of plays and events, and sporting events. Rebel pride is strong here. Local realtors know that Crestview School District is considered the most desirable in Columbiana County, with homes selling quickly and a waiting list of potential buyers. Property values are rising. We are fortunate to have great teachers, school board members, and a superintendent who are all dedicated to providing not just ...

Writes in support of East Palestine tax levy

To the editor: I write today to implore each and every registered voter in the Village of East Palestine to get out and vote on Tuesday, May 7 in favor of the proposed municipal income tax increase. This 0.5 percent increase is a small pittance to pay to ensure appropriate and successful operation of our fine police and fire departments. These dedicated folks work tirelessly and with much personal sacrifice to provide security, safety, and emergency services to our community. They lay their very lives on the line each time they answer a call. Public information statements for ...
