Board seeking support for cemetery levy

To the editor: Picturesque in its setting of rolling hills and slopes, historic in its name of the village, timeless in its purpose, the Village of Lisbon has a well-known and respected cemetery. Through the years, many have commented upon this beautifully maintained site. However, the cost of this rises with the decades. On the November 8th ballot, there will be both the perpetually renewed levy and a small, new levy —these are deliberately as minimal as possible. Those responsible for maintaining the cemetery include the individuals who staff the office, supervise the work, and ...

Why should strained families back WB Schools Levy?

To the editor: Once again, taxpayers in the West Branch School District are being asked to support a levy that will add additional taxes to our already strained family budgets.  Inflation has impacted all of us.  Inflation is often referred to as the “Hidden Tax” leaving us poorer by reducing the purchasing power of the dollar and decreasing the value of our savings.  I find the insensitivity that is being shown by the West Branch administrators unconscionable.  This is not the time to ask the citizens of West Branch to pile on more taxes as we struggle to cope with profligate ...

Past, present, and future of The Lisbon Cemetery

To the editor: I am writing on behalf of those that we have lost and in hopes of securing a peaceful and safe resting place for our loved ones at the Lisbon Cemetery in the future. Having lived here all my life and experiencing the loss of many friends and family over the years, it gives me peace of mind knowing their memories will not be forgotten. It makes me proud to have one of the nicest final resting places when that time is upon us. It seems that it is getting harder and harder these days to take care of the cemetery grounds with the increasing costs for personnel, equipment, ...

Encourages support of county parks levy

To the editor: The County Park District Board of Commissioners has placed a .35 mill levy on the November 8th ballot. This is a new tax which is needed for the operation and maintenance of County Parks. It will cost the homeowner of a home valued at $100,000 approximately $12.25 per year. The County Park District was created by the County Commissioners in 1974. The District received its first property, Scenic Vista Park, in 1976. In 1999, the District was asked to take on the building of the Little Beaver Creek Greenway Trail. Hellbender Bluff Park was established in 2008 and ...

Passage of levy essential to future of county parks

To the editor: When county residents vote on November 8 they will see a new tax levy for operation and maintenance of the Columbiana County Park District. The County Park District consists of Scenic Vista Park in Center Township, Hellbender Bluff Park in Madison Township and the Little Beaver Creek Greenway Trail which runs from Washingtonville to Lisbon. The best known of these parks is Greenway Trail. Attracting thousands of visitors per year, this trail is a major attraction for our county. The Greenway Trail is part of two regional trail systems, the Lake to River Greenway Trail ...

In support of Lisbon Cemetery

To the editor: I’m writing in support of the Lisbon Cemetery. Living in Lisbon all my life, I have learned to appreciate how fortunate we are to have such a well-maintained place to put our loved ones to rest. As a child, my friends and I would walk through the grounds. Play on the big bridge and run up and down the hills. I visit there often. I had a positive experience when my husband recently passed on. The staff and groundskeeper were nothing but helpful. Please support our November 8th levy. Keep our cemetery beautiful. DIANE DULL, Lisbon
