To the editor:
Finally! My hat's off to the 20 House Republicans who truly represented their districts. What they were asking Kevin McCarthy, the newly-elected Speaker of the House, to do is what every red-blooded American wants: USA Federal Government fiscal responsibility. And, in my opinion, it's about time.
And, to make sure that McCarthy doesn't forget his promises, they made sure just one House member could call for a new election for Speaker of the House. The swamp doesn't like that so it must be the right move.
Nancy Pelosi states that weakens the Speaker. Compared to her as Speaker, she is absolutely correct. No more last-minute Omni Bill budgets 4,000 pages long with 24 hours to comprehend. No more, "You must pass the bill to find out what's in it." Hopefully, no more red-ink budgets that add to our existing unwieldy debt burden.
Maybe, as a bonus, we will get some action on our shameful southern border crisis. Maybe these brave 20 souls will start cleaning up the mess in Washington. Maybe even drain the swamp a bit. That's not popular or an easy job but my hat's off to the 20 that want to try. Maybe even "term limits!" Those 20 House members really got my attention!
As an Ohio resident, I was disappointed that our only two senators voted "yes" and only eight House members voted "no" against the $1.7 trillion budget. With a debt approaching $32 trillion, what were they thinking? Or were they?
Balanced budget, debt reduction, southern border crisis, the ease with which to reprimand or even replace the Speaker seems to me a good start.
It's about time to we followed Ben Franklin's advice. Good old Ben was credited this sage advice, and I quote: "I'd rather miss a good dinner than wake up in debt." Good advice!
I, and I'm sure million more state: "Good luck Kevin. We're counting on you to start getting our house back in order."
