To the editor:
While Ohio may be known for its large population centers like Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati, there are over 2.3 million Ohio residents (https://www.ruralhealthinfo.org/states/ohio) that live outside of metro areas. In fact, more than 65 Ohio counties are comprised of over 90% rural land (https://www.cleveland.com/data/2022/04/the-20-most-rural-counties-in-ohio.html).
As a former city council member in Wellsville, I advocated for the Ohioans that live in rural communities and saw the devastating impact when these communities got left behind in policy decisions, especially when it concerns accessing quality health care options.
However, one program that has consistently helped rural seniors and people with disabilities address their health needs is Medicare Advantage, which has expanded to serve 3.7 Americans in rural areas across America.
The program offers benefits that make the lives of rural Americans easier, like expanded access to telehealth services, virtual fitness classes, and the home delivery of essentials like prescription medication and groceries. This is life-changing coverage for those who cannot drive, are far away from their primary care providers, or do not have the time to make long treks to the gym.
In the upcoming session of Congress, it is crucial that Senator-elect Vance considers his rural constituents and joins the group of lawmakers that want to ensure that Medicare Advantage is strong, stable, and available to all those who wish to enroll.
