Leetonia
–Officers responded to a resident in the first block of Washington Street at 2:34 p.m. March 6 for a reported explosion. The caller, a neighbor, advised that at around 8 or 9 a.m. they had heard a loud explosion and followed by smoke coming from all openings of the residence. Officers attempted a wellness check at the residence, but the resident was not home at that time.
–Officers responded to the first block of Madison Street at 1:14 p.m. March 6 for a report of an open door on a business. Officers found no open door on the business, which is under new ownership and was simply unlocked with the owner present.
–Officers responded to the 200 block of Chestnut Street at 5:21 p.m. March 5 for a report of harassment. The caller advised they were receiving threatening messages on a texting app from a person she does not know. Officers advised the caller to block the number and see if that resolved the issue.
–Officers responded to the 200 block of High Street for a report of a person with multiple active warrants including one out Michigan for assault, and another out of New Springfield for OVI at 1 p.m. March 5. Officers confirmed the warrant out of New Springfield, finding the man, Jeff Harper Sr., had a second warrant for resisting out of the same jurisdiction, and spoke with a resident, Breanna Chambers, Leetonia, who was not originally forthcoming with information, but did advise her mother had Harper staying at the residence. Officers advised Chambers not to call or text her mother or Harper about the about the warrant until officers had Harper in custody, and Chambers advised she did not want him at the residence. At around 1:09 p.m. Chambers contacted the department by phone advising that Harper was supposed to be returning to the residence soon and providing a description of her mother’s vehicle. Chambers also advised officers were welcome to “stake him out” if they wished. Upon speaking with Chambers at 2:07 p.m. she advised officers that she had texted her mother making her aware of the warrant against officers’ orders and was taken into custody for obstruction. Harper had not been arrested as of March 5.
–The school resource officer responded to the high school principal’s office for a juvenile issue at noon March 4. The principal questioned a student about an incident that had just occurred in the boy’s restroom, and the marijuana odor emitting from the restroom. The student advised that he smelled the odor coming from the restroom when he was there but denied it was him. When asked to empty his pockets the student produced a vape device which he advised was all he had on him which was confirmed with a handheld metal detector. The incident was handled by school administration in accordance with district policy and officers advised that the vape device would be tested for THC, and he could possibly be charged through the juvenile court. Investigation is pending.
–Officers responded to the 100 block of High Street at 3:54 p.m. March 1, for a report of a line down. The fire department was contacted to respond, and officers stood by until they determined it to be a cable line and cut it down.
