Bettura playing for playoff-bound W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Washington & Jefferson College football team has reached the NCAA Division III playoffs for the second straight season.

The Presidents (8-2) will travel to Susquehanna (8-2) in Selingsgrove, Pa., at noon Saturday.

W&J holds a 2-1 edge in the series against Susquehanna. They met once before in the postseason with the River Hawks winning 28-20 in 1986.

Former Crestview High School standout Roclen Bettura is a junior linebacker and key special teams player for W&J.

Bettura has played in all 10 games and is 12th on the team with 19 tackles, including nine solos and 1 1/2 for losses.

He has played in played in 29 career games for the Presidents with 35 tackles.

W&J, the PAC champion, is making its 28th NCAA Division III playoff appearance.

Geneva in bowl

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Geneva College football team returns to the postseason for the first time since 2009.

The Golden Tornadoes (6-4) will play at the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles (6-4) in the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Scotty Whitelaw Bowl at noon Saturday at Bob Boozer Field.

The teams have played four times before with Geneva winning all four from 1986-89.

Both teams average more than 35 points a game, but the Golden Eagles hold opponents to an average of 16.0 points a game compared to 29.7 points for Geneva.

MEC honors

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University junior running back Hunter Patterson has been named the Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Years.

Patterson, a former Oak Glen High School standout, was the Hilltoppers’ leading rusher for a second straight season.

Patterson delivered one of the most prolific seasons in program history. He led the MEC in scoring (120), rushing touchdowns (17) and total touchdowns (20), while finishing second in yards rushing (1,219).

He averaged 7.0 yards per carry, while being West Liberty’s second-leading receiver with 33 catches for 418 yards (12.7).

West Liberty finished 3-8 overall and 3-5 in the MEC.
