Beaver Local students warned of human trafficking

LISBON — Human trafficking is a crime that can occur anywhere and Beaver Local High School students were recently educated on the crime by state officials.

Earlier this month students attended a special assembly held with guest speakers Mary Kate Waggoner, Anti-Human Trafficking Victim Advocate, and attorney Linda Powers, Legal Director of the Ohio Human Trafficking Initiative at the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

Beaver Local School District Superintendent Eric Lowe said that weeks before the assemblies, state officials met with high school administrators and teachers to discuss the content of the presentations and the importance of awareness of this type of crime.

He said that specifically, high school senior Lillie Wyse was instrumental in connecting high school administrators with the Human trafficking initiative through her work as a Teen Board Ambassador with the Ohio Attorney General’s office.

“The crime of human trafficking is a hidden but very real threat that affects communities across the United States, including here in Ohio. High school students are among the most vulnerable targets, often approached through social media, friendships, or seemingly harmless promises, “Lowe said.

He added that the assemblies were designed to equip students with knowledge and tools to recognize warning signs, protect themselves, and support their peers who may be at risk.

“Students learned about practical strategies for staying safe and where to turn if they or someone they know needs help. Beyond safety, the assemblies fostered empathy, responsibility, and awareness of this important social issue,” he said.

In other matters, the Beaver Local Board of Education has hired a new School Resource Officer to replace Officer Anthony Savina who is leaving the position.

Lowe said Savina has decided to step away from law enforcement to pursue different career opportunities.

“His hard work and positive impact on the school community has been appreciated,” Lowe said.

The district had a formal send-off for Savina prior to the regular board meeting.

Savina’s replacement as School Resource Officer is James Cannon.

Cannon is a longstanding member of the St. Clair Township Police Department and has already been on district grounds training as Resource Officer over the last few weeks.

“Beaver Local Schools are excited to have him as a part of our school community,” Lowe said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
