See the problem?

Editor: The state legislature is considering two bills (Senate Bill 366 and House Bill 617) which would dramatically alter the way medical professionals are regulated in Ohio, including optometrists. Under the bills, about a dozen boards would be eliminated and consolidated in some cases with unrelated professions. For instance, optometrists would find themselves governed by the same board regulating audiologists and speech-language pathologists. Many local professionals, including optometrists like myself, are opposed to this unnecessary action. First, all boards ...

A matter of pride

Editor: To be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior, should be a matter of pride, not only for the history that has passed through it, but respect for how it was built and maintaining its original architecture. The Courthouse Inn in Lisbon  is listed on the National Register as Ohio’s Oldest Brick Building. When it was restored, the government’s guidelines for exterior restoration were followed. If you question those guidelines, take a good look at how exquisite it is. How could it have been done ...

Negley’s danger

Editor: In September a lawsuit was presented to Common Pleas Court regarding the fact that human body parts were in the debris dumped in the landfill above Negley. Negley’s source of drinking water is in a direct line below the dump. The geological drainage runs south toward the Ohio River, right through Negley. Each home in Negley has its own private well in line with the southern drainage. Why would any organization like the Ohio EPA and the Columbiana County Heath Department permit such harmful health and environmental problems to occur? Was it the tipping fees given ...

A healthier pantry

Editor: According to the Health and Hunger in America 2014 report presented by Feeding America, over half (58 percent) of the households that access food pantries have at least one member with high blood pressure. One-third of the households have a member with diabetes, and more than three in four households (79 percent) reported purchasing inexpensive, unhealthy foods to make ends meet. Health disparities are more common among low income areas as well as in Appalachian communities. Columbiana County lies within the Appalachian region and according to Ohio Development Office of ...

Levy facts

Editor: This letter is written on behalf of the Lisbon Levy Committee. As most of you know we have been working hard to promote passage of a 1 percent income tax on earned income for the Lisbon School District. We appreciate all of the support and feedback that we have received since the start of the levy campaign. We would like to inform you of the following: 1. There is a definite need. The Lisbon School District has not asked for an operating levy for the last 35 years. Our cash reserves will be exhausted in the very near future. Ohio law prohibits any school district ...

Two voices raised on the race for county recorder

Editor: It is ironic the Democrat candidate for county recorder, Tiffany Chetock, is running for county office on her “record of saving money” and her “extensive training in fiscal management.” Yet, as Madison Township fiscal officer, her record has been anything but fiscally responsible. In fact, many believe that she has just plain mishandled the funds that the taxpayers of Madison Township have entrusted to her. With Tiffany Chetock as fiscal officer of Madison Township, moreover, spending has risen three of the past four years. In total, these increases in spending ...
