Land of the free, home of the cool

Editor: Colorful Christmas lights lining Main Street reflect in the beautifully decorated storefronts to be enjoyed by all traveling to the local high school. It’s Friday night and the high school gymnasium is filled with enthusiastic fans ready for a basketball game between two local rival teams. The pep band prepares to play our National Anthem, the crowd quiets down and the Star Spangled Banner begins. This is a Norman Rockwell moment in the finest form. Then — that Americana moment is gone. There, on the shiny basketball court, the cheerleaders stand as if part of a ...

Editor: Over the holiday, I had the pleasure of visiting Bye & Bye Hardware, a cornerstone business of Lisbon’s historic downtown. Adding to the charm of the painted tin ceilings, swinging ladder shelves and helpful employees who have known my family for years were homemade cookie trays, punch and the smell of candles burning. This quaint and cozy feeling can only be felt in these family-owned businesses in the village where I’m proud to have grown up. But just a five-minute drive up Market Street will quickly dissolve your feelings of small-town charm. While a ...

Postal praise

Editor: I marvel at how expeditiously our postal department moves the hundreds of million pieces of mail and packages during the Christmas season. When I was a boy growing up in East Palestine, I remember the mailman delivering my official Gene Autry sheriff’s badge, which I had sent for along with a Kellogg’s Cornflakes box top and 25 cents. As I recall, in those days the mail was delivered twice a day. When my father bought out a couple underground coal mines in Pike County, Ky., we settled in a remote hollow called Harmon’s Branch. An elderly man named Ira ...

She wants blood

Editor: I served on East Palestine council or about 20 years, so I know that it is a thankless and difficult job. Usually I try to support council because I am thankful that they will give their time to serve the community of East Palestine. Their action on Dec. 27 regarding the park board, is not something I can support. Larry and Sandy Wales have faithfully served on the park board for years. They went above and beyond what their duties were. You do not treat volunteers the way council did, because they needed new blood. I commend Larry, Sandy and the Wales family for ...

Editor: To tear down the 200-year-old Taste of Coun-try/Pine Tree Inn/Hanna property is a slap in the face to a community that has pride in its historic uniqueness and three-brick deep buildings. It is not uncommon that when a company moves into an historic town, they show a commitment to the future of said town, and a promise from Discount Drug Mart that they are here to stay by not tearing down, but readapting and enlarging said building, if need be. Almost every Discount Drug Mart is brick, so why not keep it and enlarge it? When you enter into Lisbon from the north the ...

Street beefs

Editor: I respect the service of Lisbon village council members but winced when I read the public chastising of the street department that some council members leveled at a recent meeting. Their comments ran in a front page story in the Morning Journal on Dec. 17. There is no need to be so harsh about perceived problems with this year’s leaf collection. Equipment breakdowns are inevitable and Mother Nature controls the weather. Further, leaves lingered on trees longer than usual this year. I do not personally know any of the street department workers, but I do see them ...
