Editor: I served on East Palestine council or about 20 years, so I know that it is a thankless and difficult job. Usually I try to support council because I am thankful that they will give their time to serve the community of East Palestine. Their action on Dec. 27 regarding the park board, is not something I can support. Larry and Sandy Wales have faithfully served on the park board for years. Editor: To tear down the 200-year-old Taste of Coun-try/Pine Tree Inn/Hanna property is a slap in the face to a community that has pride in its historic uniqueness and three-brick deep buildings. It is not uncommon that when a company moves into an historic town, they show a commitment to the future of said town, and a promise from Discount Drug Mart that they are here to stay by not tearing down, but readapting and enlarging said building, if need be. Editor: I respect the service of Lisbon village council members but winced when I read the public chastising of the street department that some council members leveled at a recent meeting. Their comments ran in a front page story in the Morning Journal on Dec. 17. There is no need to be so harsh about perceived problems with this year’s leaf collection. Equipment breakdowns are inevitable and Mother Nature controls the weather. Further, leaves lingered on trees longer than usual this year. Editor: The state legislature is considering two bills (Senate Bill 366 and House Bill 617) which would dramatically alter the way medical professionals are regulated in Ohio, including optometrists. Under the bills, about a dozen boards would be eliminated and consolidated in some cases with unrelated professions. For instance, optometrists would find themselves governed by the same board regulating audiologists and speech-language pathologists. A matter of pride

Editor: To be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior, should be a matter of pride, not only for the history that has passed through it, but respect for how it was built and maintaining its original architecture. The Courthouse Inn in Lisbon  is listed on the National Register as Ohio’s Oldest Brick Building. When it was restored, the government’s guidelines for exterior restoration were followed. Negley’s danger

Editor: In September a lawsuit was presented to Common Pleas Court regarding the fact that human body parts were in the debris dumped in the landfill above Negley. Negley’s source of drinking water is in a direct line below the dump. The geological drainage runs south toward the Ohio River, right through Negley. Each home in Negley has its own private well in line with the southern drainage. Why would any organization like the Ohio EPA and the Columbiana County Heath Department permit such harmful health and environmental problems to occur? Was it the tipping fees given ...
