A healthier pantry

Editor: According to the Health and Hunger in America 2014 report presented by Feeding America, over half (58 percent) of the households that access food pantries have at least one member with high blood pressure. One-third of the households have a member with diabetes, and more than three in four households (79 percent) reported purchasing inexpensive, unhealthy foods to make ends meet. Health disparities are more common among low income areas as well as in Appalachian communities. Columbiana County lies within the Appalachian region and according to Ohio Development Office of ...

Levy facts

Editor: This letter is written on behalf of the Lisbon Levy Committee. As most of you know we have been working hard to promote passage of a 1 percent income tax on earned income for the Lisbon School District. We appreciate all of the support and feedback that we have received since the start of the levy campaign. We would like to inform you of the following: 1. There is a definite need. The Lisbon School District has not asked for an operating levy for the last 35 years. Our cash reserves will be exhausted in the very near future. Ohio law prohibits any school district ...

Two voices raised on the race for county recorder

Editor: It is ironic the Democrat candidate for county recorder, Tiffany Chetock, is running for county office on her “record of saving money” and her “extensive training in fiscal management.” Yet, as Madison Township fiscal officer, her record has been anything but fiscally responsible. In fact, many believe that she has just plain mishandled the funds that the taxpayers of Madison Township have entrusted to her. With Tiffany Chetock as fiscal officer of Madison Township, moreover, spending has risen three of the past four years. In total, these increases in spending ...

Two voices raised on the race for county recorder

Editor: I find it equally amusing and baffling that Tiffany Chetock continues to unfairly criticize incumbent Columbiana County Recorder Theresa Bosel despite the fact Chetock doesn’t even know what the job entails. What the voters of Columbiana County should conclude from this Sunday’s front page story is the second to last paragraph, “Chetock has no specific plans for the office, but if elected, will visit other recorders to better learn the job.” She admits she has no idea what she’s doing. Chetock is using dirty tactics to deceitfully pull the wool over voters’ ...

Our choice

Editor: In regards to the letter concerning Halloween: I’d be more worried about what my child was watching on TV or the internet than I would be about them dressing up and going out trick or treating. The problem is not the children, it is what their parents are allowing them to be taught in schools and what the parents have given up, their parenting duty. You had the child, you teach, you set the example, you make the decisions that will shape their morals and character. Stop letting the government do what you should be doing and do it without any excuses. There is an ...

Election prayer

Editor: I think with less than 20 days until the election, it is time to really start praying for this election and for this country. 2nd Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” We need to pray this each day up until the election and even after the election. This country needs to get “one nation under God” back into existence. Dorothy J. Faloba Lisbon
