Against the CRA

Editor: The new Community Reinvestment Act approved by the city of Columbiana raises several significant issues. The first involves the city’s ability and intent to provide millions of dollars in tax abatements. For example, people building a new house in Firestone Farms or Old Saybrook would receive a tax abatement of $60,000 or more. Higher end homes would qualify for even larger abatements. The newly proposed triplex, rental units would receive abatements of about $90,000 per unit. If the proposed 14 units are built, the tax abatement would be around $1.2 million. Getting ...

Editor: Today our economy is humming along at a rate which Obama and his fellow party members told us would never occur. We were destined to be a service economy a la flipping burgers at McDonald’s, Wendy’s or Burger King. A stagnant employment rate, a sluggish economy, threats from North Korea and Iran and second-class treatment by the Chinese were here to stay in a new world order according to these nabobs of nincompoopery. Editor: On behalf of the Board of Mobile Meals of Salem, we would like to extend our appreciation to the outstanding staff of the Salem Regional Medical Center which prepares our meals for delivery and the volunteers who braved minus zero degree weather to keep our delivery history intact. Since Feb. 2, 1976, Salem Mobile Meals has completed 312,115 deliveries. We have never missed a delivery. I’m no victim

Editor: I am am writing in an effort to correct inaccuracies stated in the submission from Karen Seidner of Lisbon titled “Law Should Bite Back at Someone” regarding an incident that happened in August at the Columbiana County Dog Pound. I am the volunteer who was bitten. I applaud and am thankful for Amy Lynn Dowd, Heidi Jo Pecorelli, Jessica Lynn Gordon, the deputies and inmate who came to my aid and Mike Halleck for their immediate actions. Prayers for us all

Editor: With whom does one associate when contemplating communal prayers? Among others, it’s the needy, the destitute, world leaders, and not least of all, the politician. Go to church or the synagogue and you’ll most assuredly hear the minister, priest or rabbi praying on their behalf, week in and week out. Seldom do men of the cloth and their parishioners alike fail to make these standard supplications to God. An exception should be made in the case of the politician. Prayers for him are totally unnecessary. He has no financial worries whatsoever from where he presides ...
