Help needed to establish new food bank

To the editor: Columbiana is the “Friendliest City in America,” an honor bestowed by Reader’s Digest in 2020. One of the notable features of the city was the Oasis Food Bank, a community outreach begun by four young ladies, part of the First Christian Church, ten years ago. From a small beginning, volunteers from throughout Columbiana County joined in to help feed 400 families by the end of its run in December 2022. After such a service of Christian outreach, the ladies decided it was time to forgo the huge amount of time dedicated to this project, each an average of 30 hours ...

Responds to recent editorial

To the editor: A response to your editorial printed Friday, January 20, 2023 titled ‘Not in My Backyard’ Approach Hypocritical is warranted because the facts about industrial-sized solar projects being proposed in Ohio need to be provided to the good citizens of Columbiana County. This is especially important because one such project is proposed for Franklin Township, namely Kensington PV I, LLC. The first inspiring quote from the editorial was, “Those who were worried about preserving “agricultural character,” were less worried about the actual farmers.” Somehow, the ...

Show respect for the American flag

To the editor: I had the pleasure last Saturday morning of attending and watching a well-organized youth basketball league for player development in Salem. Coaches and parents were on hand providing encouragement and the basic fundamentals and skills for the game of basketball. A good crowd on hand to cheer on the young players. About six , or seven older siblings, looking for things to do, started bouncing basketballs off of the huge American flag hanging on the wall in the corner of the gym. No one said anything, or did anything to stop the disrespect to our flag. I made my way ...

Another view on Lisbon’s proposed Christmas bonus

To the editor: For some on Village Council, a proposal to pay Lisbon Village employees a Christmas bonus last month smacks of fiscal irresponsibility, according to a January 12th letter to the editor. I disagree. In a letter full of figures, the writer omitted the most important number: namely that the village had a carry-over, or surplus of $508,000, in the general fund in 2022. Lisbon’s general fund carry-over or surplus has soared since 2020 when the village adopted cost-cutting measures in the face of the COVID pandemic, as well as an increase in the income tax rate. We have ...

Hats off to these House Republicans

To the editor: Finally! My hat’s off to the 20 House Republicans who truly represented their districts. What they were asking Kevin McCarthy, the newly-elected Speaker of the House, to do is what every red-blooded American wants: USA Federal Government fiscal responsibility. And, in my opinion, it’s about time. And, to make sure that McCarthy doesn’t forget his promises, they made sure just one House member could call for a new election for Speaker of the House. The swamp doesn’t like that so it must be the right move. Nancy Pelosi states that weakens the Speaker. Compared to ...
