Columbiana is the "Friendliest City in America," an honor bestowed by Reader's Digest in 2020. One of the notable features of the city was the Oasis Food Bank, a community outreach begun by four young ladies, part of the First Christian Church, ten years ago. From a small beginning, volunteers from throughout Columbiana County joined in to help feed 400 families by the end of its run in December 2022.
After such a service of Christian outreach, the ladies decided it was time to forgo the huge amount of time dedicated to this project, each an average of 30 hours weekly, in addition to working full-time in some of their cases. At the final distribution, tears were aplenty from both the folks who were served, as well as those who served. A huge debt of gratitude is due to these four fine ladies.
As we often note, when God closes a door, he opens a window. This is where we are now, reviewing the project and seeing how we can open a new program, but also praying and looking at other banks, to see how we might be able to improve (although it is difficult to improve on perfection) the mission.
I think it is safe to say nearly all community service programs depend on volunteers and finances. Oasis was blessed with a great group of Christian folks who were part of a wonderful experience. My wife often commented when telling friends that she believed she got as much out of the program as those who received the food. I guess it is true "it is better to give than to receive."
Polling the Oasis volunteers, most indicated they would like to be a part of the new organization. The truth is they were very tired people at the end of the packing and the giveaways. We welcome and need new volunteers to help us in our mission. More information will be available soon. Apologies to the chamber office, Victoria and Coleen.
