South Range adds graduation seal for class of 2023

CANFIELD – The South Range school board has added a local graduation seal for the class of 2023.

The board approved a local graduation of fine and performing arts that can be achieved by students for graduation requirements. The seal will be granted to students who achieve three years of art, chorus or jazz assemble or two years of band or flag line.

The seal is one of three local ones that will be required in addition to nine state seals that will be required for graduation, according to high school Principal Stephen Rohan.

At the school board meeting this week, Rohan reported students will have to achieve three local seals and nine state seals for graduation for 2023. He said this year, students who cannot earn the 18 required points on the graduation test must earn two state seals instead.

In other business, the board approved memorandums of understanding with the South Range Classified Education Association to include a snow removal position; and the South Range Education Association to include DJ services and moving the start dates of the contract.

The board also approved the paper/pencil administration of the third-grade English language arts assessment for the 2022-2023 school year, which schools superintendent Bethany Carlson said provides the greatest opportunity for students to achieve success.

In personnel business, the board approved the retirement of Laura Elder as high school English teacher, effective June 30; the resignation of Tammy Haag as Title One Instructional Aide effective June 2; and the resignation of Matthew Brooks as middle school assistant track coach effective March 14.

The board also approved supplemental contracts to Lisa Dado as Middle School Boys Track Coach, Melissa Starkey as Volunteer Softball Coach and Joe Brooks as middle school assistant track coach.

Additionally the board granted a one-year limited teaching contract to Maria Joseph for high school ELA teacher; two-year contract to Jaclyn Disibio as director of student services, for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 school year; a three-year contract to J. Elaine Brancaccio as school psychologist and RtI coordinator though the 2024-2025 school year.

Also at the meeting, Rohan reported the Cafaro Family has donated $10,000 to the district in recognition of high school state championship wrestling program.

“It’s an unbelievable gift from a very generous family which is always giving to our district…They are very good to the kids in the valley,” Rohan said.
