LISBON — A Cleveland man accused of beating another man before stealing his backpack, wallet and gold watch in Salem last year pleaded guilty to felonious assault and robbery.
Donate D. McKissic, 21, entered the plea in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court to a lesser robbery charge, a third-degree felony, and the second-degree felony charge of felonious assault.
Sentencing was set for April 1.
The charges against McKissic originally included a first-degree felony aggravated robbery and second-degree felony felonious assault for the incident on Aug. 27 when he dragged the victim from inside a Salem business, slammed his face into the outside wall and continued to beat him before robbing him.
Also in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court:
— Johnathon Weaver, 36, Sprucevale Road, East Liverpool, was sentenced to 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession of fentanyl-related compound, a fifth-degree felony, for possessing fentanyl on Feb. 23, 2023. The prison term was ordered served at the same time as the sentence he’s already serving for five and a half to six years for charges of aggravated possession of drugs, possession of cocaine and possession of fentanyl-related compound, failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, and receiving stolen property. All the charges stemmed from an incident May 12, 2022 when Weaver fled from police. The drugs involved included methamphetamine, cocaine and a fentanyl-related compound.
— William L. Gist, 56, St. Clair Avenue, East Liverpool, was ordered evaluated by the Forensic Psychiatric Center of Northeast Ohio for competency to stand trial and plead not guilty by reason of insanity for two separate cases. His defense counsel requested the evaluations, which were granted by Common Pleas Court Judge Megan Bickerton. In one case, Gist was indicted for fifth-degree felony assault for allegedly attempting to cause a harm to a female jail employee by throwing two dinner trays at her on May 1 while he was an inmate at the Columbiana County jail. In the other case, he was indicted for felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony, for allegedly causing harm to a woman on Jan. 7, 2023 with a previous charge of violence on his record for an aggravated burglary from 1999.
— Christopher Hyler, 35, Depot Road, Salem, was sentenced to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty to three counts fourth-degree felony assault, fifth-degree felony harassment with a bodily substance, and misdemeanor resisting arrest. He received credit for 151 days served in jail. When the Columbiana County Drug Task Force, Perry Township Police and the Adult Parole Authority responded to Fresh Mark in Salem on Aug. 11 to conduct a warrant arrest on Hyler, he bit the finger of an officer, causing the finger to go numb, while the officer was attempting to stop him from spitting on an Adult Parole Authority officer. Hyler also kicked at a Perry Township officer while actively resisting arrest.
— Brad Symanski, 45, whose last known local address was Maple Street, Lisbon, was sentenced to nine months in prison for two counts assault, three counts harassment with a bodily substance, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, all fifth-degree felonies, along with an additional six months in prison for three counts harassment with a bodily substance, a fifth-degree felony, for a total sentence of 15 months for three separate cases. On May 16, Symanski refused to be handcuffed while in booking at the county jail, fighting with corrections officers and spitting on them. He also attempted to cause physical harm to two of the officers, then spit on three of them. The vehicle charge involved him operating a 1993 Chrysler liberator on June 4, 2021 without the consent of the owner, Terry Mullins. The most recent incident occurred Sept. 22 when Symanski spit in the faces of two EMTs and a sheriff’s deputy while strapped to a cot to be transferred to a hospital. The jail nurse advised he had tested positive for Hepatitis C. Prior to that, he had been acting unruly in booking, continuously banging on the door after being told to stop. According to court documents, jail staff had already sprayed him with pepper spray multiple times due to his combative behavior.
— Gordon Davis, 47, Echo Dell Road, East Liverpool, was sentenced to an indefinite term of four to six years in prison for second-degree felony aggravated possession of drugs, along with sentences of 12 months and seven months to be served at the same time as that sentence, for fourth-degree felony receiving stolen property and aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony. He received credit for 166 days served in one case and 187 days credit for another case. He was ordered to forfeit $1,060 for a specification of money from a drug case. Charges of aggravated trafficking in drugs and drug paraphernalia were dismissed. On July 28, 2021, Davis possessed an amount of methamphetamine equal to or greater than five times the bulk amount but less than 50 times the bulk amount and possessed a stolen 12-gauge shotgun. On Nov 24, 2020, he possessed methamphetamine.
— Denim Paoli, 39, Avondale Street, East Liverpool, was placed on a treatment plan for three years after pleading guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated possession of drugs, a fourth-degree felony, originally a third-degree felony, a fifth-degree felony aggravated possession of drugs, and possession of cocaine, a fifth-degree felony. He received credit for one day served in jail. On May 1 2022, Paoli possessed methamphetamine in an amount greater than bulk, but less than five times the bulk amount, along with cocaine and psilocyn.
