Hughes has big weekend at EOWL

AUSTINTOWN — Nationally ranked Jake Hughes of Beaver Local swept through his matches on Friday and Saturday to earn the most valuable wrestler award at the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League tournament at Austintown Fitch.

Hughes had three quick pins and an a technical fall to win at 157 pounds for his second career EOWL crown. The sophomore improved to 29-3 on the season as he defeated Southern Local’s Rowan Wiley by pin in 1:15 in the final.

Hughes is ranked 15th in the nation at 157 pounds by FloWrestling.

Hughes was not the only Beaver winning titles on Saturday.

Freshman Jordan Bates (25-2) won at 106 by scoring a 4-0 win over Austintown Fitch’s Chayce Kemble in the final. Kemble was the top seed. Bates is ranked second in Ohio in Div. II at 106 by DubStat.

At 175, Beaver Local junior Evan Ours (24-8) dominated South Range’s Edward Stachowicz with a pin in 2:34. It is Ours’ second EOWL title.

In probably the most competitive championship match of the evening West Branch senior Beau Nezbeth (35-0) used a reversal in the dying seconds of the match to upset Beaver Local senior Bobby Buchheit 2-1 at 150 pounds. Buchheit, who is still recovering from knee surgery, fell to 13-1 on the season and is ranked No. 2 in the weight class by DubStat. Nezbeth is ranked sixth.

At 215, West Branch senior Gavin Hang (26-3) pinned Louisville’s Jake Beard in 5:13 to take home the weight class title. Hang is ranked sixth in his weight class by Dubstat.

Louisville won the overall team title, while Beaver Local finished third.

Beaver Local will be back in action on Sunday in the Ohio High School Coaches Association regional duals at Steubenville High School.

Beaver Local is the third seed in the tournament and will open with No. 6 seed Carrollton. The winner of that match will face the winner of No. 2 seed Claymont and No. 7 seed West Holmes for a berth in the state tournament set for Feb. 14 at Bishop Watterson High School.

EAST PALESTINE — Salem’s girls wrestling team picked up two champions on Saturday at the East Palestine tournament.

Delaney Callahan (26-12) won at 115 pounds, while Paige Menough (29-1) took first at 140.

Panther Classic

RAYLAND — Oak Glen’s Noah Schmidt led the Golden Bears with a 10-4 decision over Martins Ferry’s Tayson Palmer in the 215-pound championship on Saturday at the Buckeye Local Panther Classic.
