Eight Beavers to EOWL semis

AUSTINTOWN — Beaver Local’s wrestling team advanced eight to the semifinals of the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League tournament on Friday at Austintown Fitch.

Beaver Local freshman Jordan Bates (23-2) will meet Brookfield’s Brayden Reed (1-0)in a 106-pound semifinal. Beaver sophomore John Burkett (16-8) advanced to the semifinals at 120 and will meet Hubbard’s Logan Balla (30-5) in a semifinal.

At 132, Beaver Local junior Leo Wilkes (20-6) will take on Louisville’s Liam Montgomery (22-6) in a semifinal. He will be joined by Beaver Local freshman Matthew Tomaino (16-8) in the 144-pound semifinal where he will met Louisville’s Aric Criss (22-5).

Beaver Local senior Bobby Buchheit (12-0) secured his place in the 150-pound semifinal against Howland’s Aidan O’Donnell (29-4). Beaver sophomore Jake Hughes (27-3) had no trouble reaching the semifinals at 157. He’ll take on Alliance’s Johnny Beltz (32-7).

At 165, Beaver Local senior Braedon Landfried (12-2) punched his ticket to the semifinals. He’ll take on South Range top seed Tyson Seesholtz (29-2) in Saturday’s semifinal.

At 175, Beaver Local junior Evan Ours had two wins to advance to the semifinal against Girard’s Vinnie Ragozine (23-9).

The top seed at 215, West Branch senior Gavin Hang (24-3) will take on Xzavior Mayo (33-6) in that semifinal.

Action continues Saturday with the championship finals set for 4:30 p.m.

Rambo places at YSU meet

YOUNGSTOWN — Westminster senior and Crestview High School graduate Shelby Rambo finished eighth in the women’s weight throw at Youngstown State’s Mid-Major Invitational on Friday.

Rambo posted a personal-best 45-feet-8 1/2 in the 58-thrower competition. It is the third-best throw in Westminster history.

Westminster will split its team Saturday, completing YSU’s two-day event while sending a group to the Jim Wuske Collegiate Invitational at Mount Union.

Blue Streak to Germany

MUNICH, Germany — The international sports scene is about to see a Blue Streak.

John Carroll quarterback Nick Semptimphelter has signed with the German Football League (GFL) for the 2026 season. He will be playing with the Munich Cowboys, one of the league’s founding teams from 1979 with a rich history and a semifinals appearance in 2025.

A two-year starting quarterback, Semptimphelter led the Blue Streaks to the 2025 NCAA Division III national semifinals. He set NCAA records this past fall with a 77.9% single-season pass completion percentage and a 96.2% single-game pass completion percentage.

Semptimphelter’s first game with the Cowboys will be on May 9.

Suns send Cavaliers’ win streak

PHOENIX (AP) — Dillon Brooks scored 27 points and the Phoenix Suns beat Cleveland 126-113 on Friday night to sweep a back-to-back and end the Cavaliers’ winning streak at a season-best five games.

On Thursday night against Detroit, the Suns gave out “Dillon the Villain” T-shirts before Brooks scored a career-high 40 points in a 114-96 victory. Phoenix has won three in a row with scoring leader Devin Booker sidelined by a sprained ankle.

Brooks was 9 of 14 from the field. He hit 2 of 4 3-pointers and 7 of 8 free throws. The Suns were 23 of 48 from 3-point range.

Jordan Goodwin added 17 points to help Phoenix improve to 30-19. Collin Gillespie had 16 points.

Jalen Green returned from a right hamstring injury to play only his fifth game of the season. Acquired from Houston in the deal that sent Kevin Durant to the Rockets, Green had 11 points in 15 1/2 minutes.

De’Andre Hunter led Cleveland with 17 points. Donovan Mitchell and Jaylon Tyson each had 16, with Mitchell committing eight turnovers.

The Suns outscored the Cavaliers 45-32 in the third quarter to take a 97-79 lead. Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson was ejected early in the fourth with his second technical foul of the night, and Phoenix pushed the lead to 30 at 109-79.

Phoenix led 52-47 at the half. Cleveland had 15 first-half turnovers.

The Cavaliers will play at Portland on Sunday night.

Oak Glen girls down Tyler

SISTERSVILLE, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s girls basketball team will go into the OVAC tournamnet with a win after downing Tyler 56-39 on Friday.

Oak Glen is 9-5 and heads to Union Local on Monday for the OVAC Class 4A semifinal. The Jets are the top seed while Oak Glen is No. 4.

The winner will play on Saturday in the final at the ECO Center in St. Clairsville.
