Not the place for intrusion

Editor: To city of Columbiana — if you were not aware, your appointed and some of your elected officials have determined that you are not capable of rational thought, now it seems that the location to which you choose to plant a garden is something that is worthy of government intrusion. This city has thrived and prospered before this new draconian zoning mindset that the city now seems to favor, and we will continue to thrive after it. We live in a great city full of many different types of individuals, now it seems is the time for us all to get involved and remind those in ...

Questioning medical marijuana

Editor: In the past weeks, we have read several articles in the local newspapers as well as others within the region that individuals are looking to develop a medical marijuana cultivation facility or agricultural area within the Salem and/or surrounding areas. Individuals have completed their research of the state law, and have worked with an attorney indicating they are meeting the letter of the law, meeting zoning regulations and other regulations indigenous to the law. We are sure that extensive planning has been done in order to bring the industry to our area to help the ...

Remembering those we lost

Editor: In 1962, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, through a joint resolution of Congress, established Peace Officers Memorial Day, beginning May 15, 1963. He also established May 15 of each year and the calendar week May 15 occurs as National Police Week. May 15 is a vitally important day for law enforcement officers, which honors and remembers police officers who died in the line of duty. Editor: How did all this political correctness nonsense get started anyhow? The PETA kooks are plucking lobsters from the tanks in restaurants and setting them free in the ocean. Michael Bloomberg has spent $150 million trying to shut down coal-fired power plants. Supervisors of the school lunch programs in Utah are complaining that government mandated menus are replacing mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, beans and wieners with carrot sticks, broccoli and apples, which usually end up dumped into the trash cans. The Cleveland Indians as well as the Atlanta Braves and Washington ...

Center’s need for a fire levy

Editor: On Feb. 13, 2016, Center Township suffered the loss of its building and all of its equipment, except for the backhoe and police cruiser, to a fire. The Board of Center Township went to work with the help of our community and completely rebuilt our township. Now we have a wonderful new building. But we have a new problem now — the funding of Center Township’s share of cost for the Lisbon Fire Department, which we share with Elkrun Township and Village of Lisbon. Our township has two old fire levies which are outdated funding that was created back in the 1980s and ...

The grad mill

Editor: Is there a crime called snookery? If so, our universities should be indicted for it. The taxpayers are burdened with over a trillion dollars in student loans because of these snake oil peddlers. High school graduates who can’t pass English or math proficiency tests or get a loan to buy a big screen TV are granted tens of thousands of dollars in loans by our government to pay for college. For those who choose not to stay on campus, their apartments and cars are paid for. In many cases the extra money goes for booze, drugs and video games. The recruiters for the ...
