SALEM — John R. Harris, 83, passed away on May 6, 2026, at Auburn Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation.

Born on July 22, 1942, in Salem, Ohio, he was a son of the late George F. and Lila (Ritter) Harris. John grew up with the values of hard work, humility, and kindness that would guide him throughout his life.

A lifelong area resident, John was a 1960 graduate of United High School. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army Reserves and then accepted a position with Salem Valve, where he worked for 19 years until the company closed. He later purchased Salem Septic Service and operated the business for 26 years before retiring. Through his years of work, John earned a reputation as an easy-going, dependable, and honest man who took pride in doing things the right way. His life reflected a simple and sincere approach that left a lasting impression on those around him.

John was a member of the Columbiana County Antique Tractor Association and enjoyed participating in antique tractor pulls. An outdoorsman at heart, he enjoyed coon, deer, and turkey hunting, making maple syrup, cutting firewood to heat his home, and searching for morel mushrooms. Above all, John found his greatest joy in time spent with family, especially his grandchildren.
