Wellsville residents vent frustrations with village issues to council

WELLSVILLE — Several residents had a lot to say regarding their concerns with issues in the village during Tuesday’s council meeting. During the public portion of the meeting several residents addressed their concerns about weeds and neglected yards owned by the village, noting if residents are supposed to take care of their property, then the village should be responsible for village property. Leetonia police investigating overdose death

LEETONIA — The Leetonia Police Department is investigating an overdose on Columbia Street. Police Chief Allen Haueter said that the department responded to a report of an unresponsive woman in the 300 block of Columbia Street at around 10 a.m. Thursday. Haueter confirmed that a 46-year-old woman was dead of from an overdose but said he could not disclose the victim’s name when contacted Friday afternoon. City of Columbiana announces extension for stormwater improvement project

COLUMBIANA — The City of Columbiana is announcing an extension for the completion of the ongoing Court-Herbster stormwater improvement project. The project was originally scheduled for completion on Aug. 22. During construction, several field conditions were identified that required adjustments to the original project plan and scope of work. The city and its project team determined that allowing additional time would provide the contractor with the opportunity to properly address those conditions and complete the project to the standards expected by the city. Criminal case in alleged theft of charitable donations still unresolved

LISBON — The criminal case against Amanda M. Kiger and River Valley Organizing for allegedly stealing charitable donations for personal use remains unresolved. During a hearing last week before Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam, a new status hearing was set for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10. A jury trial remains set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 13. Boardman area contractor convicted of stealing from clients fails to show for probation violation hearing

LISBON — A Boardman area contractor convicted in 2024 of stealing from clients was scheduled for a probation violation hearing in three separate cases Friday, but failed to show up. Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam issued a bench warrant for John P. Bartos, 43, Youngstown, when he didn’t arrive for the 10:30 a.m. hearing. His defense attorney, Frank Cassese, who was present, filed a motion shortly before the scheduled time of the hearing to withdraw from the case, citing irreconcilable differences with his client. Salem Fire Department receives grant for hazmat training

SALEM — The fire department has received a grant from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. The commission awarded the department an $8,808 grant for hazardous material training which is part of a round of funding which includes 43 entities across the state totaling $800,000 in grant funding. Fire Chief Scott Mason said that the department had initially applied for approximately $12,000 in funding and that the grant would be used to pay for part of the cost for a 36-hour confined space and technical rescue training through Bad Day Training at the start of 2027.
