EAST LIVERPOOL — East Liverpool firefighters extinguished a structure fire at a vacant property on Riverview Street in the early hours of Friday morning.
Firefighters received the alarm for the fire at 4:08 a.m., and arrived on scene at 818 Riverview St. at 4:14 a.m.
Firefighters found the garage behind the vacant house engulfed in flames, with just the block walls standing.
According to the report provided by the fire department, the crew started to attack the fire with a hose and were successful in putting out the bulk of the flames.
Firefighters tried attaching a hose to a hydrant on Chester Avenue but had to abandon the line after a water break caused gravel to be sucked up into the line.
Firefighters worked to dig out hot spots they were still burning in the garage and checked the house to make sure the fire had not spread and found the fire had been contained to the garage.
According to the report, the structure was vacant and unsecured, and firefighters found the garage door lying on the ground next to the garage when they arrived on scene and the rear door to the house had been forced open. Firefighters were able to close and lock that door.
After extinguishing the fire, the firefighters worked on salvage and overhaul, which involved checking to make sure the fire is fully out and there are no hidden hot spots that could lead to a rekindling of the fire.
Firefighters had the fire under control at 4:27 a.m. and cleared the scene at 5:56 a.m.
The report provided by the fire department listed pre-fire value of the property at approximately $5,000 with contents at approximately $1,000.
According to the Columbiana County Auditor’s website, the property is owned by David M Dopler and/or Kathryn Dopler.
Following an investigation, the cause of the fire was undetermined.
