United BOE learns about possible affects of House Bill 186

HANOVERTON — The approval of House Bill 186 could prove costly for the United Local schools, a top fiscal administrator reported.

During a board meeting Thursday morning, district treasurer Melissa Baker reviewed House Bill 186 and its potential impact on the district, including clawback provisions that would reduce district revenues $298,402 from the 1976 levy and $80,603 from the 1981 levy.

“We anticipate HB186  will deduct $568,506 in fiscal year 2027 and possibly $1,137,012 through FY30 due to retroactive caps back to our last reappraisal,” she projected.

During principal reports, Melissa Cooper from the elementary school reported third-grade teacher Kelly DeVille received a $500 grant from the Retired Teachers Association to purchase items for her classroom.

The fourth grade also held a winter warmth drive, collecting 471 pieces of items like hate, gloves, socks and school supplies. First grade was the drive’s winning collector and received a hot cocoa and pajama day.

Joe Swantak from Hammond Construction also was on hand to update board members about the renovation project, which is expected to cost anywhere between $1.9 and $2.8 million depending on decisions they make.

All options include Pre-K revisions and a three-story HVAC system.

The variable is the extent of roofing work to be undertaken.

District superintendent Lance Hostetler noted that the district also needs to address the track and BC building.

Board members also discussed the calendar for the upcoming school year.

The meeting concluded after a 45-minute executive session for employment and compensation of a public employee or official.

The next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11 in the district media center.

Starting at $2.99/week.
