Environmental film fest to mark derailment anniversary again

EAST PALESTINE — The second anniversary of the Norfolk Southern train derailment and subsequent chemical release in East Palestine will be marked by a film festival.

The second-annual Environmental Film Fest is part of the Environmental Empowerment Through Unity: A Night of Healing — an event that will take place at McKim’s Winery on Feb. 3 to reflect on the impact the derailment had on those who lived through it.

The film fest, which will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., is described as “a thought-provoking and inspiring in-person cinematic event in Ohio that aims to shed light on pressing environmental issues through the powerful medium of film.”

According to organizers, the festival was established in the wake of the derailment and “serves as a poignant reminder of the local community’s environmental challenges while also addressing global concerns.”

In addition to the film screenings, the festival seeks to “bring together like-minded individuals, environmental activists, filmmakers, and local residents with discussions, workshops, and Q&A sessions with filmmakers.

The film festival is presented by Robert Corna — an assistant director and producer, known for Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), The Avengers (2012) and Summer of Sam (1999). Corna has worked with Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Mel Gibson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Daniel Day Lewis, Jon Voight and many others in a career that spans over 20 years in the film and television industry.

The Environmental Empowerment Through Unity event will begin at 2 p.m. with an update of National Institute of Health (NIH) studies by the researchers gathering and analyzing the data. Residents will have a chance to speak with NIH researchers, register for studies and hear about completed test results from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

The somber reflection concludes with the Uniting of Community Ceremony — which will give area residents an opportunity to talk with residents from other environmentally-impacted communities — from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and participate in a healing ceremony.

Starting at $2.99/week.
