Lisbon parts ways with high school marching band director
LISBON — The Lisbon school district parted ways with now former high school marching band director Dan Patterson on Oct. 16 for what Superintendent Joe Siefke described Monday as “poor decision-making and inappropriate decisions.”
Lisbon Police Chief Mike Abraham confirmed that Patterson was escorted from school property that day and that the situation is still under investigation by the police department. There was no arrest and he said no charges of any kind have been filed against Patterson.
Without going into too much detail about what Patterson did or did not do, Siefke said “a series of events occurred on the weekend of Oct. 14 that led to the Lisbon school district meeting with him that Monday and acting quickly and decisively with their decision.”
The band performed at a band show in East Palestine on Oct. 14.
This was Patterson’s second year as band director. He had been hired specifically as marching band director through a supplemental contract. He was not a teacher in the district, although he had been a substitute. He’s also been removed from the list of substitutes for Lisbon schools.
“The running of the marching band program was not to the standards of the Lisbon school district. Poor decision-making and inappropriate decisions have led us to move on without his assistance for the rest of the fall season,” Siefke said.
Siefke had high praise for the band boosters who helped with senior night for the band members last week, the first without their director. The band will be traveling to perform Friday for the Blue Devils football playoff game at Western Reserve High School in Berlin Center.
He said the supplemental contract for the assistant marching band director was also finished. According to Siefke, both contracts will be paid in full.
In talking about Patterson, Siefke said “he made some bad choices and we decided his contract has been fulfilled and he’s done.”
