SALEM — Area residents no longer have to drive a distance to experience fresh Japanese cuisine now that Sumo Steakhouse & Sushi opened in the Salem Plaza last month.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce ambassadors celebrated the restaurant coming to Salem with a ribbon cutting Tuesday afternoon. Manager John Dong said it’s a true family venture. The owner is Xin Dong and the kitchen is staffed with family members. According to John Dong, they employ 15 workers which includes eight local servers and the rest family.

Most positions are part-time, but he said they’re still hiring servers.

The family also has a location in Steubenville and decided to come to Salem because they noticed residents had to go out of town to get fresh Japanese hibachi and sushi offerings. He stressed that everything is cooked fresh to order, nothing is frozen, which makes for a healthier choice.

The menu offers a wide variety of choices of seafood, chicken or steak, sushi bar entrees, hibachi dinners, soups and salads, sushi rolls and appetizers such as dumplings, egg rolls and fried calamari. There’s even a kid’s menu and desserts. John Dong said they’re awaiting their liquor license and hope to have the bar open soon.

The restaurant features dine in, take out or catering, with a spacious dining room in the 8,000 square-foot facility and a party room that can seat 80 guests and can be used for meetings with a screen available for presentations. The party room can be reserved.

He said the response of the community during their first month was really good and a lot of people come and order sushi. There’s an Ohio roll on the menu and people like the steak.

“I just want to have people come and try a local business,” he said.

The restaurant will be open on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The address is 2350 E. State St. and the phone number is 234-575-7188.
