Salem thespians to take the stage

The Salem High School Drama Department in association with the Dramatists Play Service, Inc. of New York City will present John Van Druten’s “Bell, Book & Candle” 8 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7 in the SHS auditorium. The play is directed by Robert Viencek. Production is under the guidance of Anthony G. Martinelli and Frank Zamarelli is designing the lighting and sound for the show. Cast includes Sydney Kline, Dakota Sommers, Dana Tonkinson, Tyler Roth and Delaney Willoughby. Lily Secrest is the show’s student director, and Grace Shockey, the stage manager. Crew members include Andre Tonkinson, Haleigh Mroczkowski and Ally Ripley. Tickets for the Salem High School production are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors available through the cast and crew or at the door on the night of the performance.

Southern seeks military donations

In honor of Veteran’s Day, the Southern Local High School American History classes will be collecting donation for Christmas care packages to send to currently deployed military service members for Operation SOS (Send Over Seas). Send information on anyone currently deployed who was a Southern Local graduate to the school or by calling 330-843-6253 or email mrs.k.stowers@gmail.com. Donations can be made as well as monetary donations in order to ship the packages to room F130 at the high school. Donations will also be accepted before the Veteran’s Day assembly at the school. Many items can be donated, including boot socks (gray, green or black), ziploc bags, band-aids, candy, crackers, chips, kool-aid or other drink mixes, beef jerky, canned goods, cookies, gum, taco bell packets, books, games, cards, chap stick, deodorant, tissues, floss, soap bars, wet wipes, batteries, letters and more.

SHS Class of ’91 selling poinsettias

The Salem High School Class of 1991 is selling poinsettias in a variety of colors including red, pink, white, marble and white glitter as part of its Pay It Forward campaign, with 100 percent of proceeds to benefit the SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund. Orders will be taken until Nov. 23. Flowers may be picked up Dec. 4, in the SHS auditorium lobby between 4-6:30 p.m. The flowers are grown locally and are priced: 4.5-inch pots, $8; 6.5-inch single stem, $14; 7.5-inch double stem, $20; 8.6-inch triple stem, $25; and amaryllis, cyclamen and hydrangeas are available for $20. Octoberfest set at Edison

Edison Local’s fifth annual Octoberfest celebration will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the high school. Elementary pupils from throughout the district will wear their Halloween costumes for the festivities. The event will include a parade, trick-or-treat stations, costume contest, snacks, pumpkin painting, games and an appearance by the Irondale and Bergholz fire departments featuring a safety house. EHS students are volunteering their time to man the games and set up the stations while students, teachers, staff, and school clubs collected candy to disperse. Children who attend must be accompanied by an adult.

Craft fair slated at Orchards

There will be a Holiday Craft Fair 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 10 at The Stone Pear Pavilion, at the Orchards, Chester, W.Va. A Chinese auction will be held and lunch will be available for a fee. Proceeds benefit the Residents’ Activity Fund.

Bus will visit the light show

Seat reservations are being accepted for the bus trip to Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens slated for Dec. 13 for the Salem Memorial Building Association’s third annual “Deck the Hall” Christmas celebration. The estate is illuminated inside and out with over 800,000 lights including “DAZZLE”, an outdoor light show animated to music, Gingerbread Land for the kids and the Corbin Conservatory. Bird will flock to Salem Library

The Salem Library and Salem Parks and Recreation are hosting a “Go Wild in the Park” series program, “Attracting Birds to Your Backyard” presented by Jeff Harvey, president of the Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley, 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at the library. Arthritis seminar set

Library board seats open

The East Palestine Library board is accepting application letters for three seats on the board. Students to serenade the vets

Students at Southeast Elementary in Salem will be performing a Veterans Day concert beginning at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 10. Artwork also will be on display. The PTO will be raffling off these quilts. Raffle tickets cost $5 each or five for $20 and will be sold the evening of the concert. If unable to attend that night, you may stop by the office of Southeast and purchase tickets prior to Nov. 10.

Southern to honor veterans

Shop local and win a prize

The Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce will host Shop Small, Win Big during the month of November. This contest is an effort to promote the Shop Small, Shop Local campaign created by American Express. Participants are encouraged to shop local, any business in the 44408 zip code, throughout the month of November, save their receipts, complete an envelope provided by the Chamber and submit the envelope containing the receipts to the Chamber office by noon Dec. 4. Three prizes will be awarded: first place will receive $500, second place will receive $250, and third place will receive $100. Winners will be determined by the largest number of 44408 businesses patronized. In the case of a tie, winners will be randomly selected. Speakers address family issues

The Christina House Domestic Violence Program has speakers available for community organizations, churches and service groups. Christina House speakers are available to inform of the services of the Christina House, speak about the dynamics of domestic violence, what makes for a healthy relationship and how to address bullying issues. There are two offices in Columbiana County, Catholic Charities Senior Center, located in East Liverpool, and the Christina Center located in Lisbon. The East Liverpool Historical Society is hosting its annual dinner, “Prohibition: Bootleggers – Rum Run Runners – Gunslingers” at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at the East Liverpool Country Club. Card-making program slated

Adopt-A-Class this Christmas

Robert Bycroft School is sponsoring the Adopt-A-Class project for Christmas. This project involves donating eight dollars per student, eight students per class ($64). This money will be used by staff members to purchase a gift for each child. Santa will deliver gifts at the Christmas party. Crown to audition for ‘Footloose’

Crown Theater Productions will hold auditions for “Footloose” from 6-9 p.m. Nov. 2 and 3 at Main Street Theater in Columbiana. Children ages 6 and up and men and women all ages are welcome to audition. Prepare a one minute song of choice and a script reading is required.

The Kids Korner brings comfort

Judge Joyce Dumbaugh Chernenko has invited the public to a dedication ceremony for “The Kids’ Korner,” a children’s area created in the Family Court’s facility in Hancock County, W.Va., at 1 p.m. Nov. 23. The Family Court is located in the New Cumberland Municipal Building. The Kids’ Korner has been designed as an area which will allow children a sense of comfort during times when they are required to come to the courthouse because their parents are involved in a Family Court case. A reception will follow in the Family Court’s courtroom adjacent to the Kids’ Korner.

Hospice holding food drive

Community Hospice, Salem is collecting donations of non-perishable foods for Fall Community Food Drive. Drop off canned, boxed and baking goods 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday from Nov. 1-23. Lisbon parade slated Saturday

The Lisbon Area Chamber of Commerce and the Lisbon Kiwanis will host a Halloween parade 4 p.m. Saturday at the Methodist Church. Cash prizes will be awarded for the winners of the different categories. Refreshments will be served. Any questions on the event, call 424-1803.

Fundraiser to aid Edison track

The Edison track and field team will host a quarter auction 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the high school. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a $5 donation at the door. OVCT collecting for the troops

Ohio Valley College of Technology now has a donation drop-off point for local soldiers overseas. In conjunction with Boatsie’s Boxes, Inc. OVCT is trying to fill 275 Christmas stockings for deployed men and women in the United States Military. Suggested items for stockings include Christmas candy, chocolates, slim jims, jerky, trail mix, all nuts, chewing gum, dried fruits, life savers, dvds, cds, playing cards, wet wipes, travel dental kits, small shave cream, razors, lip balm, tissues, batteries, crew socks, wash cloths and more. Fun for the kids, chili for all

Victory Christian Center, Columbiana, is sponsoring a fun festival for kids and a chili cook-off for adults beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Hot dogs and chips will be provided for children. Kids are encouraged to wear costumes, but no scary costumes.

Work to affect Liverpool water

There will be a water outage today in East Liverpool affecting all customers on Allison Street and Smithfield from Marcus heading north as well as Gardendale from St. Clair to McKee for water main work on Smithfield at Gardendale. Work will begin at 1:30 p.m. The outage should only last a few hours and there will be a precautionary boil order affecting the same areas afterward.

ODOT still mowing, are you?

ODOT will be brush cutting along U.S. 30 from Lisbon to Hanoverton and along Route 558 from Route 45 to Franklin Square this week. Also on the schedule are mowing Route 45 from Lisbon to Salem and the Salem Bypass area; arm mowing from Route 164 from Salineville to Lisbon; and culvert replacement on US 30 between Hanoverton and Lisbon.

East Liverpool to honor vets

The East Liverpool Junior/Senior High School is sponsoring an “Appreciation for Your Service” pancake breakfast and program to honor all area veterans 8:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at the high school fieldhouse. ELO Christmas plans parade

The East Liverpool Christmas parade will be 6 p.m. Dec. 5 with registration at TJD Sports at 5 p.m. The theme is “A Hopeful Christmas” and celebrates survivors of hardships and new hope for the community. There will be a pick-up truck in the diamond of downtown East Liverpool from 5-9 p.m. Dec. 5 where donated food, clothing and toys can be dropped off to help underprivileged children in the community. Donations will go to the Salvation Army. Vending booths will be located along the parade route providing hot chocolate and coffee, and the Beacon Association and East Liverpool Tourism Bureau are looking for groups in the area to participate. Feline project targets Palestine

Angels for Animals will hold a Halloween breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Andrews Hall at the shelter, 4750 W. South Range Road (Route 165), Canfield. All proceeds will go to the Feline Voucher Project targeting East Palestine. The Feline Voucher Project will offer $10 vouchers to East Palestine residents to spay or neuter their cats regardless of income. Area businesses in East Palestine are helping by sponsoring this breakfast. Their sponsorship pays for the costs to put on the breakfast so more proceeds can go directly to spaying and neutering cats of East Palestine residence. Vouchers will be available at the sponsoring businesses: Brittain Motors, Cornerstone Insurance, Gorby’s Grocery, Stone Springs Vineyard and Covelli’s Dairy Queen in East Palestine ad Bo’s Pet Shoppe in Columbiana. United to sponsor bus trip

CAA to stand up for veterans

The Community Action Agency is hosting a stand for county veterans who are homeless, low income, or at risk of being homeless from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 7 at St. George Hall, Lisbon. It will include a food and clothing giveaway and information booths staffed by representatives of various social service agencies and other local programs. The goal is to give veterans access to information on a wide array of local services available to them in the county. Edison FFA holding fruit sale

Edison High School FFA is holding its annual fruit and nut sale to provide snacks and gift ideas for Christmas. Orders will be submitted until Nov. 3, while payment must be made upon delivery in December. FFA members are selling a variety of citrus fruits, apples, nuts and even barbecue sauce. Costs include $10 for a quarter box of apples only and range between $16-$25 for a half box of either fruit, while whole boxes are $26-$35 for either fruit. Nuts cost from $6-$15 and include a variety of peanuts, cashews, almonds, pecans and mixed nuts plus Brittle Bites, Berry Nut Trail Mix and caramel corn. The Lepper Library in Lisbon is presenting a class on Google documents from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5. People will learn how to create documents on-line using their Google account. Salem parade slated Thursday

The annual Sons of Amvets Halloween parade will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday in Salem. The parade starts on South Broadway in front of city hall and ends at the KSU City Center, where judging in the costume contest will be held. Refreshments will follow at Amvets Post 45 on South Broadway.

Candidate to meet ELO voters

FFA hosting petting zoo today

Southern Local High School FFA is hosting a petting zoo during the Highlandtown Volunteer Fire Department Fall Festival from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today. It is free and, weather permitting a rabbit, chicken, duck, piglet, and sheep, a horse and calf will be available to pet. About 15 FFA members are expected to help with the event.

Visit the haunted woods at CCCTC

The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center is hosting the Haunted Woods from dusk until 8 p.m. from Oct. 26-28. The cost for this event is $6 for ages 12 and up and free for children under 12. The cost of admission includes refreshments.

East Fairfield hosts trunk or treat

The East Fairfield United Methodist Church, New Waterford, will hold Trunk or Treat 6-7 p.m. Oct. 31. Prizes will be awarded for the scariest, most original, funniest trunk, scariest trunk, most original and funniest costume for children and adults. “Me & myself” in Columbiana

Columbiana native Jim Couchenour will use a mixture of acting, video and live music to portray his life with Tourette Syndrome as a theater production called “me & myself” and chronicles the musician’s life with TS. Author to represent Storybook

The Creative Learning Center: The Salem Storybook Museum (lower level at KSU City Center) will present Judith M. Hendershot as its featured guest author for the 2015-16 academic school year. Hendershot will speak at Southeast Elementary School on Oct. 27 and will give four presentations to the students and teachers. Hendershot is the author of two picture books for young readers.

A Storybook night for veterans

The Creative Learning Center: Salem Storybook Museum in association with Salem City Schools will present “Celebrating America’s Veterans: A Star Spangled Evening” at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Salem High School auditorium. Lieutenant General Robert R. Ruark, Military Deputy to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness and newscaster Stan Boney of WKBN will be the keynote speakers. Music for the evening will be provided by the SHS marching band, the SHS Encore Choir and the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Choir. The Bettie Lee Dance Studio of Lisbon will provide two dance numbers. Highlandtown fest is Saturday

The second annual Highlandtown Volunteer Fire Department Fall Fest is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the VFD. Vendors will be selling all types of products and the firemen will have the kitchen open. There is also a free car cruise from noon-4 p.m. and a DJ starting at 5 p.m. Trunk-or-Treat will start at 3 p.m. where participants can decorate the trunk of the car and hand out candy to the kids. Diabetes health fair scheduled

Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) is hosting its annual Diabetes Health Fair 6-8 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Salem Community Center. Featured speaker Julie Stefanec, RD, LD, a registered and licensed dietitian at SRMC, will present “Healthy Holiday Meal Planning.” Clinicians from the hospital and other local organizations will also provide displays and information on diabetes care. Light refreshments will be served. Admission to the event is free, but registration is required by calling 330-332-7707.

Flu shots available in ELO

Appointments for flu shots are being taken by the East Liverpool health department, with shots given between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday-Thursday. The cost is $20, with cash only accepted. Shots are given in the upper arm so short-sleeved clothing is recommended. For an appointment, call 385-5123.

Range candidates will gather

A community forum will be held 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in the South Range auditorium for those interested in learning about the views and ideas of the 10 candidates running for the South Range Board of Education. The South Range Drama Club and South Range Speech and Debate Team will be hosting the event. Each candidate will have five minutes to speak about why they are running for a position and explain their ideas. This event is strictly informational and not a debate amongst the candidates. Community members will have an opportunity to ask questions and speak to the candidates one on one after the forum.

Southern plans treat night

Southern Local Elementary will host a trick or treat night 5-7 p.m. Oct. 29. The event is organized by the school PTO and allows kids to collect candy and visit with their classmates. The kids will trick-or-treat in costumes from classroom to classroom on the elementary side of the building. There will be cookies and face painting along with photos available. High school art students are creating the autumn backdrop for the photos, which will be sold for $5 each. The face painting also costs $1 and proceeds from both sales go to the PTO for other school activities.

Book reading set at Oak Glen

Oak Glen High School senior Luis Neer will give a reading from his new book, “This is a Room Where You Wait for New Language,” from 6-8 p.m. Saturday . The event in the new Chaffin Luhana Foundation Media Center also will include readings by other students and an open mic. Advance copies of Neer’s book, which is set for release on Tuesday, will be available for purchase for $7 at Saturday’s event. Neer’s poetry has been published in numerous online and print journals.

Beaver NHS?selling candy

The National Honor Society will be selling bracelets and ribbons at this Friday’s football game between Beaver Local and Martins Ferry. Proceeds from the sale will go toward breast cancer and childhood cancer research. This will be Beaver Local’s alumni night, and all school alumni are encouraged to attend the game, which will kick off at 7 p.m. Former cheerleaders, marching band, color guard, majorettes, football players and homecoming royalty are encouraged to attend and be recognized.

Techers will use some blacklight

You need a tree to plant a tree

The Lisbon Shade Tree Commission has used up its 2014-15 allocation for cutting down trees and stump removal, due mostly to the June 2014 thunderstorm that struck the village. Leaf bags still available

Perry Township residents can still pick up some free paper leaf bags at the South Station off of Depot Road, but should call first at 330-337-7266. Trustee Don Kendrick said the bags are also available at Salem City Hall. He said residents should bring identification to prove residency. Leaf pickup in the township begins Nov. 2 for two weeks on the north side, then switches to the south side on Nov. 16 for another two weeks. State Street is the dividing line between north and south. Bags must be able to be lifted by one person. Sticks and twigs must be bundled and will be picked up separately.

Energy assistance available

The Community Action Agency of Columbiana County (CAA) will be taking applications for Emergency HEAP and Winter Crisis Program beginning Nov. 2 through March 31, 2016 at the Lisbon office. Appointments can only be made by calling the automated scheduling system by calling 330-424-1386. Homebound and seniors 62 years and older may call 330-424-4013 for appointment assistance. Walk-in applicants will be taken on a first come, first serve bases during the period of Nov. 2-14 beginning at 8 a.m. Walk-ins will cease once the maximum number of daily appointments has been signed in. An evening with Mister Poe

“An Evening with Edgar,” the fourth annual dramatic reading of the works of Edgar Allan Poe, will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Hancock County Museum, New Cumberland, W.Va. The annual seasonal dramatic reading, sponsored by Hancock County Arts Council, features retired drama teacher Kelsey Hayward as Edgar Allan Poe. To put a new twist on the evening’s events, Hayward will be joined by performances from friends in period costume who will add a take to portions of the evening’s readings and tales. Light refreshments will be served following the readings. The event is free and open to the public, but donations to the Hancock County Museum are welcome.

Meet the elusive John Brown

The Kent State-Salem library continues its fall lecture series at noon Thursday with the second of its Prof Talks featuring Dr. Craig Paulenich, English professor on the Salem Campus. In his lecture, “Finding a Language for Understanding John Brown,” Paulenich said he will seek to find a discourse that might shed light on the elusive John Brown. The brown-bag lecture is free and open to the public.

Coats to be distributed in Lisbon

A community-wide free coat distribution will be held this 10 a.m.-noon Saturday to noon at Lisbon First United Methodist Church. The coat distribution is one of several activities planned for the church’s annual Make a Difference Day. A free produce distribution will be held at 9 a.m. and a free lunch will be served beginning at 10:30 a.m. A Fall Festival for youth will be held the same day from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Anyone with new or like-new coats to donate may still bring them to the church this week.

Test yourself on a simulator

The Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol in cooperation with ODOT and Columbiana Safe Communities have partnered with Wal-Mart for a safety event. ODOT will be providing a distracted driver simulator 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Salem Wal-Mart that participants can try out for free.

Work to affect Route 558 drivers

ODOT announced that state Route 558 at Route 45 and Teegarden will be closed from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. this week for tree trimming and canopy removal. State crews also will be mowing along state Route 11.

Lion on the prowl

District Governor Bob Allgood of the East Liverpool Lions Club has been busy visiting six Lions clubs around the district as well as attending six zone meetings, where small groups of clubs meet within a certain area. He assisted the Canfield Lions Club at the Canfield Fair conducting eye screenings in the Health Building at the beginning of the month. He also attended the USA/Canada Forums in Grand Rapids, Mich. He has been to clubs in Columbiana, Mahoning, Trumbull, Portage and Stark County delivering the message for membership, District School Supply Project, District Project of collecting stuffed animals for Akron Children’s Hospital, Lions Veterans Program, International Lions Centennial Program as well as hearing what all the clubs are doing within their own communities. He has also presented Lions with Chevrons, from Lions International. Chevrons are given in recognition to Lions for their long-term service, beginning at 10 years, then every five years until 75 years of service.

Legion to make care packages

The Columbiana American Legion Post 290 Auxiliary will be mailing care packages in November to local residents serving in the military, either statewide or overseas. Kraut Fest planned in Canfield

The 16th annual Kraut Fest will be 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 7 and 8 at the Haus Cider Mill in Canfield. Admission is $4 per person or $7 per couple. Children get in for free. Music will be provided Saturday and Sunday and partial proceed will go to the Diabetes Association.

Elkrun group plans Fall Fest

The Elkrun Township Tourism Bureau is holding a Fall Fest Open House from noon-4 p.m. Oct. 24. Events will include an antique tractor and equipment display at the township pavilion, located across from the Elkton Post Office. There will also be a historical display at the Tourism Bureau’s newly installed museum. The museum is located next to Lock 24 restaurant and the covered bridge. Members are still seeking items from township residents or anyone who has historical items that they wish to donate or place on loan to the bureau. Palestine schools to honor vets

The East Palestine School District is inviting district veterans and those in the surrounding areas to attend a Veterans Day ceremony at the high school auditorium at 8 a.m. Nov. 11. The ceremony is presented by the senior class and interested veterans should reserve a spot of honor in the program by calling 330-426-9401. A brief breakfast reception will follow.

Calcutta parade is Saturday

The Calcutta Halloween parade will begin at noon Saturday at the K-Mart parking lot. The parade will go through the Dunham’s plaza, past Family Video and through the Calcutta Square plaza, ending at the community center on Pugh Road. Along the route businesses will be passing out candy. Prizes will also be given to kids for different age groups for best costume, scariest and most original. Registration for the parade begins at 11 a.m. with lineup at 11:45.

ELO choir continues rehearsals

OGHS to show off media center

Oak Glen High School will reopen its recently renovated library/media center with an open house from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday. The library is now known as the Chaffin Luhana Foundation Media Center, after Oak Glen alumnus Eric Chaffin. The foundation gave the school a $25,000 grant to help pay for books, equipment and furniture. The open house also will feature student artwork from teacher Elissa Greathouse’s art class.

Lisbon sets hydrant maintenance

The Lisbon Water Department will be flushing hydrants this week beginning south of Lincoln Way on Monday, north of Lincoln Way and east of Market Street on Tuesday, north of Lincoln Way and west of Market Street on Wednesday and areas outside the corporation limits on Thursday. Customers may notice short periods of lower pressure and some discoloration is possible in and around the areas where the work is occurring. Customers are asked to refrain from doing laundry when flushing is occurring in their area.

Pancakes being served at BCSP

The Friends of Beaver Creek State Park will serve pancakes from 8 a.m. until noon today at the Pioneer Village. Along with the traditional buttermilk pancakes Gaston’s Mill Buckwheat pancakes will be featured as well as special pumpkin pancakes. The village will be open for self tours through 4 p.m. The newly designed Gaston’s Mill shirt will be for sale in the trading post. The village will be open weekends noon until 4 through Sunday, Nov. 1.

Lisbon Crop Walk set for Sunday

Lisbon CROP Hunger Walk will be Sunday and will begin from the parking lot of Lisbon First United Methodist Church with registration at noon and end at the Lisbon gazebo with music and refreshments. Walkers may choose to walk one mile or continue on to complete the two-mile path. Others are invited to cheer the walkers on at the start or along the way (primarily Washington Street and Lincoln Highway) and to celebrate with them at the gazebo. Local ministries share in the funds raised by CROP Hunger Walks and a portion of the funds raised will go to the Lisbon Banquet. Route 558 closed during the day

ODOT will be mowing along Routes 7, 14, 45 and 62 this week. State Route 558 will be closed at Route 45 and Teegarden from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. through Friday for tree trimming and canopy removal.

Southern holiday concert planned

The Southern Local High School Marching Band is hosting its second annual Christmas concert Nov. 28 at the United Methodist Church. The junior and senior high groups will have several performances and will participate in the community parade at 5 p.m. The first concert will feature grades 5-7 and will be held at 4 p.m. before the parade, while the second concert starts at 6 p.m. featuring the high school band and chorus. The bands total more than 100 members. Santa Claus will also appear at Kiwanis Park across from the church and another concert will be held in town this spring.

Dinner to benefit Ronald Virden

A benefit dinner is being held for Ronald Virden, 51, son of former Glenmoor residents George (Dick) and Betty Virden, who was involved in a motorcycle accident in September from 3:30-7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Glenmoor American Legion and 7:30-10 p.m. at Dave and Deb’s in Lacroft. Cost at the American Legion is $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under as well as seniors. Carryout will be available and anyone attending the dinner at the American Legion will receive an arm band that will allow them access to the event at Dave and Deb’s. Cost for Dave and Deb’s only will be $5. There will be a live band and Chinese auction. Proceeds will go toward Virden’s recovery expenses.

Way Station offers Christmas help

The Columbiana Way Station will begin preregistrations for their annual Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program. CAA accepting coat applications

The Community Action Agency of Columbiana County will be accepting applications for a new coat distribution event sponsored by the Ronald McDonald House in partnership with the Lisbon Salvation Army Unit. A limited number of vouchers for new coats for children is available on a first come, first serve basis to low income households. Benefit planned for Miriam Good

A benefit for Miriam Good will be noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Salem VFW. A chili dinner will be available in addition to a raffle, Chinese auction, 50/50 drawing and bake sale. Door prizes will be awarded every hour. Tickets for the raffle are $5 each or three for $10. The grand prize is a whole hog donated by Blackwood Pet Food of Lisbon. The first and second-place raffle winners will each receive a half hog donated by Blackwood. United Quilt Guild will donate a quilt to the third-place winner and surprises will be awarded to the fourth and fifth-place winners. Winners need not be present to win prizes. Miriam Good is a breast cancer survivor. She graduated in 1968 from West Branch High School where she taught home economics from 1972-78. She also taught at Sebring High School from 1983 to her retirement in 2008. Over the past year and half she has been through chemotherapy, a mastectomy, back pain issues, radiation and multiple organ failure. She is now undergoing therapy at Essex in Salem. KSU to unveil art collection

Kent State-East Liverpool is holding a reception to celebrate the opening of the Art Gallery’s permanent art collection 4-6 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Mary Patterson Building. The collection features works by area artists and pieces donated by local residents, including a signed painting by the late Elsa Rubin, wife of Dr. Herschel Rubin, titled “Fall Festival.” The inaugural show will also feature two loaned works by East Liverpool artist David Blythe, provided by Dr. Marc Hoffrichter, as well as several ceramic pieces loaned by William and Donna Gray. The permanent collection will be displayed in the gallery between exhibits of other guest artists and will be open to the public by appointment. Bus heading up to Mountaineer

Orphan trains focus of historians

The Tri-State Genealogical & Historical Society will hold a program on “Orphan Trains” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Wells Building, 717 Washington St., Newell, W.Va.. The orphan trains operated 1853 to 1929, taking orphaned children from the Children’s Aide Society in New York to the Midwest to live. SWCD sets banquet, election

The Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual banquet and election will be 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at United Local High School. Salem ’91 reunion planned

The Salem High School Class of 1991 will host its 25th class reunion 5:30 p.m.-midnight July 2, 2016 at the Salem Golf Club. Plans are currently underway for additional festivities during the afternoon, including a family day, golf scramble, and a trolley tour down Memory Lane. Evening ticket prices are $35. Everyone is encouraged to buy their tickets in advance so more “extras” can be provided. Family day and golf scramble ticket prices will be announced. There will be a silent auction during the entire day. Classmates are encouraged to donate items. Bus trip to Ross Park planned

The Salem Community Center is hosting a bus trip to the Ross Park Mall near Pittsburgh on Dec. 4. Pennies gathered for charity

Edison Local High School students are participating in the Pennies for Patients campaign. Over the past month, boxes have been placed in each classroom to collect coins for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with students also taking individual boxes home to solicit more donations. A competition has been underway between each first-period class and will last until Oct. 30, after which the winning classroom will receive a celebratory breakfast or lunch party.

Scouts gathering

Boy Scout Troop 2041, East Liverpool is hosting the Scout Survival Games Friday through Sunday at Camp McKinley, Lisbon. The event is for the entire Sandy Beaver District in Buckeye Council. Area youth will be tested in their scout knowledge and spirit. The camporee will be all weekend with majority of activities taking place Saturday. This includes challenges, skills and prizes.

Room on bus to NYC

The Wellsville High School yearbook staff will be sponsoring a New York bus trip Dec. 11-13 for $90. A $45 deposit is required for each person to reserve a seat and full payment is due Nov. 13. The first bus has been filled and there is still room on a second bus. Participants will board the bus at 11:30 p.m. Dec. 11 and return before 6 a.m. on Dec. 13.

Dinner to benefit ELO woman

Desiring to look out for a member of their wrestling family, the East Liverpool Takedown Club is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner 4-7 p.m. Friday in the cafeteria of the East Liverpool Middle School on West Eighth Street. The benefit dinner is being held to help defray the medical costs of Lonnie Ice who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Ice is the mother of Dakota Ice, a member of the Potter wrestling and football teams. The cost of the dinner is $7 per person.

Legion will make care packages

The Columbiana American Legion Post 290 Auxiliary will be mailing care packages in November to local residents serving in the military, either statewide or overseas. DQ planning pumpkin hunt

The Columbiana Dairy Queen is hosting a free pumpkin hunt for ages 2-9 at 1 p.m. Oct. 24. There is a costume contest and fee photo before the hunt. This event is similar to an Easter egg hunt, except children wear a Halloween costume. Children search for candy, prizes and mini pumpkins in hay piles.

Tree work to close Route 558

Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 13, state Route 558 will be closed during daytime hours at Teegarden in Columbiana County for tree trimming work and vegetation management. Crews are expected to work on Route 558 in the area of Route 45 for two weeks between 7 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday using the SkyTrim. Beginning at the intersection of 45 and 558, traffic will be detoured south on SR to 164 and north back to 558, and reverse.

Work to affect Route 172 traffic

State Route 172 will be closed during daytime hours next Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 13-14, east of New Franklin and the Stark County line for a railroad crossing repair. Norfolk Southern plans to work between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. and expects this work to take two days. Traffic will be detoured south on 183 to Route 30 east to Route 9 and north back to 172, and reverse.

Library will host dinner theater

The Friends of the Leetonia Library are presenting a mystery dinner theater, “The Daunting Diamond Thievery at the Old Doom Mansion” at 5 p.m. Oct. 24 at the library. Schools open hallways to walkers

The Walk Warm Program for the Columbiana school district is inviting adults to walk the school hallways to exercise. The high school is open 3-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and the gym wing doors will be open. A measured course is posted for walkers who keep a log of distance. Joshua Dixon is open 3:30-5:30 p.m. and the main door will be open for entry and exit. Both areas will be closed on school holidays and when school is canceled.

Drive-thru flu clinic is Wednesday

Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will be hosting drive-thru flu clinics on 1-3 p.m. Wednesday and and every Wednesday thereafter. Stop by the office at 718 E. Third Street in Salem and receive a vaccine without getting out of the car. The cost is $25. The agency will bill Medicare Part B or Anthem Senior Advantage Products.

Saturday a good day for safety

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, the Columbiana Fire Department will host the ninth annual Community Safety Day 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Columbiana Fire Station and the EMS/ Police Stations on South Vine Street. Included will be demonstrations, equipment and vehicle exhibits of Fire, EMS and Police departments, public safety awareness, information and tips for adults and children and free food.

NHS students are good listeners

Guest National Honor Students will be at the Lisbon Lepper Library from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday to help mentor and listen to any child wanting to read to them. The program is open to children of all ages. They can choose to read a short book or up to a couple of chapters. Books can be chosen at the library or brought from home. Man to celebrate 98th birthday

In addition to its medication assistance program, the county Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) also offers help for those with Medicare Part D problems. The medication assistance program will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Lisbon Methodist Church. This program is for anyone who needs help paying for prescription drugs. Stop-motion focus of Tech Camp

SRMC to show off new center

Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) will be celebrating the completion of its new Cancer and Infusion Center during a free community open house event planned for 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday. The event will begin with a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony leading off the activities at 1:30 p.m. followed by an opportunity to tour SRMC’s new Cancer and Infusion Center, Orthopedic Bone and Joint Center and Outpatient Procedures area, and meet SRMC staff members and learn more about the specialized outpatient units. Dinner to help Matt Bowling

Storage available at courthouse

The Columbiana County Fair is offering winter storage for boats, RVs, campers, cars, motorcycles or ATVs in the buildings on the fairgrounds in Lisbon. All storage items are to be brought to the fairgrounds between 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Nov. 7. Storage is done on a first come, first serve basis. The rental fee is a one time payment due and payable on the day the items are brought to the fairgrounds and are based on the length in feet of the item. All items must be removed from the fairgrounds by March 26, 2016. Civil War ghosts to haunt library
