EAST LIVERPOOL – The East Liverpool Carnegie Library and The Friends of the Carnegie Library will host Eddie Murphy of Wellsville as she brings African American Abolitionist and former enslaved woman Harriet Tubman to live during her presentation of Harriet Tubman One Woman Show on June 4 at 6 p.m. at the Carnegie Public Library, 219 East Fourth St.
Murphy will share the story of Tubman’s escape to freedom and her journey to become a key conductor on the Underground Railroad where she helped led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom and her advocation for abolition and women’s rights.
“Selfless, Courageous, Committed: Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) is an important figure in African American and the nation’s history,” a media release from the library said. “Heralded for escorting many slaves from bondage to freedom, her life had many riveting facets. Eddie Murphy brings Harriet Tubman radiantly back to life for audiences throughout the country.”
Murphy began her research and portrayal of Tubman as a gift to her sister and she has since turned it into a one woman show which she has performed in many schools and at community organizations
Murphy is a Wellsville native who lived in southern California for nearly 40 years where she worked as director of retiree relations for Hughes Aircraft Company and then UCLA.
She returned to Wellsville 10 years ago, during which time she has been devoted to making a difference in the community. She serves as the president of the Wellsville Community Foundation.
