Columbus High School explores CFP history

MIAMI (AP) — Tuesday’s classes at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami have been canceled. There wouldn’t be much learning going on that day. No matter what happens Monday night in the College Football Playoff title game between Indiana and Miami — a game that will be played in South Florida — the Columbus Explorers will be busily celebrating the sight of alums hoisting the national championship trophy. Thing is, will it be Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner? Or will it be Miami coach Mario Cristobal? “The kids here, that’s all ...

Tomlin did it the Steelers way

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Tomlin was an unknown when the Pittsburgh Steelers plucked him from obscurity in 2007 and handed the young and charismatic Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator one of the most stable jobs in sports. Over the next 19 seasons, Tomlin wrote his own chapter with one of the NFL’s marquee franchises, winning a Super Bowl and going to another while becoming one of the most respected voices — if idiosyncratic — voices in the game. Asked repeatedly what separated Tomlin from his peers, his players pointed to his consistency. Tomlin was the same coach day ...

No easy way out for Steelers

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Tomlin, as always, got right to the point. “When you don’t get it done, words are cheap,” a subdued Tomlin said Monday night after the Pittsburgh Steelers were quickly ushered out of the playoffs again, this time in a 30-6 loss to Houston. “It’s about what you do or you don’t do.” And now it’s someone else’s turn to try to do it in Pittsburgh. The NFL’s longest-tenured head coach stepped down on Tuesday, when one of the league’s marquee franchises set a new course amid a postseason victory drought that is nearing a decade. Tomlin’s ...

NASCAR chases relevance

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR’s nearly two-year study into an overhaul of its championship-deciding format concluded Monday with the reveal that in 2026 the stock car series will return to a 10-race version closely resembling the very first iteration introduced 22 years ago. The system will return to a 10-race format consisting of the top 16 drivers in the regular-season standings. There will be no driver eliminations every three races, winning will be incentivized and its name will return to “The Chase.” The driver with the most points at the Nov. 8 finale at Homestead-Miami ...
