Koepka can’t wait to return to PGA Tour

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Brooks Koepka was freed from the final year of his contract with Saudi-funded LIV Golf and the first person he called was Tiger Woods. Three weeks later, the PGA Tour created a path back for him that starts at Torrey Pines. Koepka said Tuesday he can’t wait for the week to end because of all the attention. The gratitude of returning to the PGA Tour comes with the kind of nerves the five-time major champion rarely experiences — wondering that others think about him. “It feels a little bit different,” he said ahead of the Farmers Insurance Open, his first ...

Steelers welcome hometown kid

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The tears started early for Mike McCarthy. Really early. Considering the setting, it was hard to blame him. There the kid who grew up rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers from his family’s home in the city’s Greenfield neighborhood was on Tuesday, sitting on dais wearing a black suit with a gold tie, a Steelers pin affixed to his lapel. The job McCarthy always wanted, but never let himself imagine he would get, his at last. “I thought I’d at least be able to get started,” the new Steelers head coach said, trying unsuccessfully to choke back his ...

The Falcons’ new leadership team — including Stefanski and president of football Matt Ryan — plans to evaluate every position on the roster, including quarterback. But Stefanski said he was optimistic about Michael Penix Jr.’s future in Atlanta. “Michael, just excited about the physical gifts,” Stefanski said. “You see a player on tape that can get through progressions, can layer the ball, can push the ...

Ohio St.’s JSN vaults to stardom

SEATTLE — Former Ohio State Buckeye Jaxon Smith-Njigba made plenty of spectacular plays during the best season by a wide receiver in Seattle Seahawks history, so it wasn’t a shock that he added another highlight during the NFC championship game. Nonetheless, the one-handed catch Smith-Njigba made late in the first quarter of Sunday’s 31-27 win over the Los Angeles Rams was among his most incredible this season. Sam Darnold scrambled to his left and made a throw toward the sideline, and Smith-Njigba hauled in the pass with his right hand before tiptoeing both feet ...
