Indians grab EOAC

Southern 75, Wellsville 19 SALINEVILLE — The job is only half done for the Southern girls basketball team. The Indians captured a share of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title by downing Wellsville, 75-19, Thursday. Southern improves to 19-0 overall and 13-0 in the EOAC, one game ahead of Columbiana. Southern will host Columbiana on Feb. 11 and needs a win to clinch sole possession of the league crown. SALINEVILLE — New Southern Local head football coach Jimmy Malone has felt the community support for years. “They stepped up four years ago when I was diagnosed with hodgkin’s lymphoma,” he said. “The community and the kids supported me. I felt like this was the time for me to step up and lead the team for the upcoming fall.” Malone was hired as the new head coach by the Southern Local board of education by a 5-0 vote during a special meeting Tuesday night. EOAC title game Feb. 11 SALINEVILLE — The Columbiana at Southern Local girls basketball game to decide the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference champion has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 11. It will be a varsity-only contest beginning at 6 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Monday and moved to Tuesday due to the snowstorm, but was postponed both days. Potters get an assist EAST LIVERPOOL — The East Liverpool bowling team got a helping hand from the Beaver Local school district on Saturday at the OVAC bowling tournament in Morgantown, West Virginia. East Liverpool was experiencing bus trouble, so Beaver Local volunteered to take the Potter bowling team back home with the big winter storm looming.
