Zines playing for Penguins
WARREN — Former United High School standout Mati Zines helped the Youngstown State women’s golf team capture the YSU Spring Invitational on Monday.
The Penguins concluded the two-day tournament at Trumbull Country Club at 44-over par 620, including a 313 on Sunday and a 307 on Monday. The Penguins matched a single-season school record with their fifth tournament victory of the season.
Mercyhurst was second with a 656 (341-315), followed by Le Moyne College (N.Y.) with a 665 (329-336), St. Joseph’s (Pa.) with a 673 (346-327) and LaSalle with a 679 (341-338).
Five YSU golfers placed in the top 10, led by sophomore Valentina Pena Anaya from Mexico City with a 5-over-par 149 (74-75) for a three-shot victory.
Zines was 15th out of 39 golfers with a 21-over 165 (82-83). Zines posted a 10 on a par 4 Monday, but responded with birdies at No. 15 and No. 17.
Youngstown State will continue its spring schedule on April 17-18 with the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational at Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course.
Salem X-Tra Mile Club
SALEM — The Salem X-Tra Mile Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school cafeteria.
Jones, Miller pace Indians
BELLAIRE — Seniors Maddy Jones and Mara Miller topped the Southern Local girls at the 71st Bellaire Relays on Saturday.
Jones was third in the shot put (36-feet-0 1/2) and fourth in the discus (109-1) at Nelson Field.
Miller was sixth in the 3200-meter run (13:30.97) and eighth in the 1600 run (6:33.89). She also joined Maddie Garner, Ava Reed and Caty Brewer on the 3200 relay team that was seventh (12:18.24).
Junior Trevor Goff paced the Southern boys by placing seventh in the shot put (40-1)
Steubenville swept the team titles with the boys totaling 111 points and the girls getting 104 points.
