Bobcats claw Beaver Local

Cambridge 71, Beaver Local 40

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — It was a banner day for Cambridge and senior guard Garrett Carpenter on Saturday.

Carpenter scored 34 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as Cambridge topped Beaver Local, 71-40, in the Buckeye 8 championship game at the ECO Center.

The Bobcats won their seventh in a row to improve to 16-2. The Beaver dropped to 13-3 after suffering their largest loss since falling 86-44 at East Liverpool on Dec. 8, 2023.

Cambridge scored the first seven points of the game and opened up a 38-21 halftime lead.

Carpenter — who came in averaging 22.9 points a game –was limited to three points in the first quarter. He totaled eight three-pointers.

The Bobcats opened the second half with a 16-0 run to make it 55-21. The Beavers were held to four points in the third quarter to fall behind 57-25.

Matt Anderson topped the Beavers with 10 points. Tucker McElroy added nine.

Beaver Local will play at Oak Glen on Tuesday, while Cambridge travels to Carrollton on Wednesday.

Martins Ferry 67, East Liverpool 52

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Anthony Booth scored 23 points and Elijah Smith 21 as Martins Ferry topped East Liverpool, 67-52, in a Buckeye 8 fifth-place game Saturday at the ECO Center.

The Purple Riders led 32-19 at halftime before the Potters closed within 46-39 after three quarters. The Purple Riders scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Tyler Kirby paced the Potters with 14 points. Jayce Douglas and Dre Brown each had nine. Nolan Irving and Javan Dawson scored eight apiece.

Martins Ferry improves to 10-6, including a 71-54 win at East Liverpool on Dec. 27.

The Potters move to 8-8 heading into Tuesday’s game at Boardman, which is coached by East Liverpool graduate Steve Flores.

STRUTHERS — Crestview got a second straight win by downing Struthers, 56-44, Saturday.

The Rebels improve to 7-10.

The Wildcats drop to 2-13, including an 0-7 mark at home.

Both teams play Tuesday as Crestview visits LaBrae and Struthers travels to Hubbard.

Rootstown 91,East Palestine 56

ROOTSTOWN — Rootstown scored at least 19 points in every quarter and pulled away from East Palestine, 91-56, Saturday.

Nigel Wright led the Rovers with 17 points, followed by Carson Hayn with 13 points, Dean Abdlrasul 12 and Landon Rodstrom 11.

Rootstown improves to 8-7 and will host Ravenna on Tuesday.

East Palestine drops to 1-13 and will host Lisbon on Tuesday.

Drew Bycroft topped the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points, four rebounds and three steals. Kealin Simon had nine points and four rebounds; RJ May nine points, four assists and four assists; Clark Rutledge eights points, four assists and three rebounds; Peyton Rutledge seven points and five rebounds.

Rootstown also won the two-quarter junior varsity game, 19-16. Shane Newman had six points for the Bulldogs.

SALINEVILLE — Jack Pitts totaled 25 points and 11 rebounds and Jacob McCurdy collected 24 points and nine rebounds in leading Southern Local past Youngstown Academy for Urban Scholars, 68-49, Saturday.

Landen Heffner contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

The Indians snapped a nine-game losing streak to improve to 2-14. The Hawks drop to 2-8, including 0-5 against Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference teams.

Southern will host Columbiana on Tuesday, while Urban Scholars travel to Heartland Christian on Friday.

SISTERSVILLE, W. Va. — Tyler Consolidated made 8-of-10 free throws during a 22-point fourth quarter that gave the Knights a 70-66 win over Oak Glen on Saturday.

The teams were tied 48-48 after three quarters.

Tyler improves to 4-9, while Oak Glen drops to 8-4.

Noah Willey led the Golden Bears with a game-high 24 points, nine coming in the first quarter.Elijah Knisely added 10 points. Will Weekley and Tyler Evans had eight points apiece.

Oak Glen will host Beaver Local on Tuesday.

COLUMBIANA — Four Columbiana players scored in double figures as the Clippers rolled over East Palestine, 74-39, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Friday.

Senator Johnson collected a game-high 18 points, four rebounds and three assists and Hunter Davanzo had 16 points and 14 rebounds. Cooper Brown contributed 11 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and three blocks and Carter Johnson 11 points and three assists.

The Clippers improve to 13-2 overall and 9-1 in the EOAC, tied with Lisbon for the league lead. Columbiana will play at Southern on Tuesday and at Lisbon on Friday.

Columbiana scored at least 18 points in every quarter.

Drew Bycroft topped East Palestine with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals. Clark Rutledge had eight points, four assists and three steals. RJ May added four rebounds and two steals.

Columbiana also won the junior varsity game, 39-19. Liam McElwain scored 10 points for the Clippers. Mason Gorby had 13 points for the Bulldogs.

ALLIANCE — Gavin Gregory and Grady Hirst both had double-doubles in leading West Branch past Marlington, 45-33, in Eastern Buckeye Conference play Friday.

Gregory totaled 16 points, 13 points and three steals and Hirst had 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Kasen Weaver added eight points and three rebounds.

The Warriors improve to 8-5 overall and 7-0 in the EBC, one game ahead of Alliance. West Branch will play at Alliance on Tuesday in a battle of the EBC’s top teams. Alliance beat Carrollton, 65-44, Friday to drop Carrollton to 3-3 in the EBC, good for third place.

Marlington falls to 3-11 overall and 1-5 in league play. The Dukes will play at Minerva on Tuesday.

West Branch outscored the Dukes in every quarter, taking a 23-16 halftime lead.

West Branch also won the junior varsity game, 38-29, as Michael McCartney scored 11 points.
