Heartland 58, Warren JFK 56
WARREN — Heartland Christian snatched a 58-56 road win over Warren JFK on Tuesday.
Collin Kalaher scored 26 points and Isaiah Matthews had 16 to lead the Lions, who are off to a 5-0 start.
Heartland used an 8-2 run to pull ahead 55-50 with 90 seconds remaining.
Kalaher split a pair of free throws to give the Lions a 58-56 lead and Kennedy missed a last-second three-pointer.
Henry Phillips and Andrew Lapolla each scored 15 points for Kennedy, which drops to 1-2.
Heartland will get a break before hosting Salem on Dec. 16.
Columbiana 57, United 56
COLUMBIANA — Senator Johnson grabbed an offensive rebound off a free throw and scored with less than three seconds remaining in overtime to lift Columbiana over United, 57-56, Tuesday in an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference opener.
The Clippers improve to 3-0 overall, while United moves to 1-1.
United’s Jason Pratt grabbed a Columbiana miss and was fouled by with 7.6 seconds left in overtime. Pratt made the first to give the Eagles a 56-55 lead, but was short on the second that Columbiana’s Cooper Brown rebounded and was fouled with 5.5 seconds to play. Brown missed both free throws, but Senator Johnson lined up in the left lane and gathered the rebound on the right side for the game-winning putback.
United tied the game at the end of regulation as Kota Shasteen scored of an offensive rebound at the buzzer to make it 47-47.
Brown led the Clippers with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Hunter Davanzo totaled 11 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Brayden Clancy pulled down six rebounds.
Shasteen led the Eagles with a game-high 20 points. Pratt contributed 15 points, all in the second half.
Columbiana also won the junior varsity game, 37-20.
Zander Oliver scored 18 points and six rebounds for the Clippers. Jordan Kidder had four for the Eagles.
Both teams play Friday with Columbiana traveling to Leetonia and United hosting East Palestine.
