Mitchell leads Cavs with 35

DETROIT (AP) — Donovan Mitchell scored 35 points in just 29 minutes, and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Detroit Pistons 116-95 on Monday night for their third straight victory.

The Cavaliers had a 14-0 run in the second quarter that turned a seven-point lead into a 43-26 advantage and Mitchell’s layup made it 63-41 at halftime. He scored 14 more in the third quarter and departed shortly after his basket made it 108-73 with 7:07 remaining.

Mitchell shot 13 of 18 from the field, including 2 for 4 from 3-point range, and went 7 for 8 from the free throw line. Jarrett Allen added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Cavaliers, while Evan Mobley finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Cleveland beat Detroit for the 13th time in the last 14 meetings.

Cade Cunningham finished with 12 points for the Pistons, but shot 3 for 14 and committed five of their 25 turnovers. Ron Holland II and Tolu Smith each added 11 points.

The Pistons had won two straight after a season-opening loss.

Browns have time to deflect

CLEVELAND (AP) — Besides Myles Garrett setting a franchise single-game record with five sacks, the Cleveland Browns’ only solace from Sunday’s 32-13 loss to the New England Patriots is that they have extra time to fix their myriad problems.

The Browns (2-6) have a bye this week before the second half of the season begins with a Nov. 9 game at the New York Jets.

While the players will have most of the week off, coach Kevin Stefanski and his staff will try to figure out how to prevent the season from spiraling out of control.

The coaches will also have a willing volunteer in Garrett for self-scouting. The All-Pro pass rusher said after the game he wanted to help in any way he could during the bye week.

“I’m going to watch the film and I’m going to talk to different coaches and players and see what ideas they have on finding a way to win,” he said. “There ain’t going to be any days off for me. I’m going to continue working.”

The offense, in particular, needs urgent improvements after another inefficient performance.

Dillon Gabriel threw his first two interceptions and was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety for the Patriots. The picks led to a pair of New England touchdowns.

Crosby scores 1,700th point

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists to become the ninth player in NHL history with 1,700 points and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the St. Louis Blues 6-3 on Monday night.

Crosby, who accomplished the feat in the fourth-fewest games, is the fourth player in NHL history to reach the mark with one team. Crosby also had his 498th multi-point game, passing Mario Lemieux for the team record and sixth in NHL history on the all-time multi-point list.

Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to seven games, while Bryan Rust had two goals and an assist. Parker Wotherspoon scored his first with Pittsburgh and Anthony Mantha added his fifth of the season.

Tristan Jarry made 22 saves to help the Penguins get their fifth win in six games. Pittsburgh is 7-2-1 and hasn’t lost in regulation since Oct. 14 at Anaheim.

Fan injured after fall at Penguins

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A fan at Monday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues was was seriously injured after falling from the upper concourse at PPG Paints Arena.

The incident happened early in the first period after Anthony Mantha’s goal gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead.

Emergency personnel treated the fan, a man who was not identified, before taking him to Mercy Hospital, located a few blocks from the arena.

Play was not halted at any time while the man was being treated. Pittsburgh police told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the man was in critical condition.

“Our concerns remain with the individual and his family at this time,” the Penguins said in a statement.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who became the ninth player in NHL history to score 1,700 points, said the team found out about the fall after the game.

“It doesn’t feel right to be talking about points when you hear something like that,” Crosby said. “Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with that person and their family and hopefully they’re OK.”

Penguins coach Dan Muse echoed Crosby’s sentiments.

“We all come here for a sport and a game and when you hear something like that, it kind of puts everything else aside,” Muse said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

On Saturday night, a worker at Acrisure Stadium, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, suffered injuries to his legs when he fell approximately 50 feet while doing work near the stadium’s scoreboard.
