CORTLAND — Heartland Christian senior Rebecca Geiss is picking up speed as the postseason nears.

Geiss finished second in the small school girls division at the Legends Cross Country Meet on Saturday.

She completed the 3.1-mile course at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds in 18 minutes, 2.9 seconds for her second second-place finish in three years. She won the race last year.

Hathaway Brown senior Anna Prusak topped the 302-runner girls field in 17:50.3. Prusak finished third in the Division II state meet last year.

McDonald sophomore Naomi Sheesley was third (18:27.2). Geiss and Sheesley were second and fourth, respectively, in the Division III state meet last year.

The Salem boys placed third out of 50 teams in the small-school division with 192 points.

The Quakers were led by juniors Luke Stephens and Sam Yakubek, who finished fourth (16:17.5) and fifth (16:21.0) respectively out of 409 boys runners.

McDonald senior Joey Cappuzzello won in 15:59.2, followed by Chagrin Falls junior Kelan Byrne in 16:07.2.

Cappuzzello was fourth in the Division III state meet last year, while Byrne place 86th in the Division II meet.

The Salem girls finished eighth for the second year in a row. The Quakers scored 281 points and were led by freshman Addison Hopple’s 25th-place finish.

McDonald won the boys team title (123), while Hathaway Brown took the girls team title (37). Hathaway Brown finished second behind Minerva in the Division II state meet last year.
