Mettille shines at first Clipper event

COLUMBIANA — The 27th year of the Clipper Cross Country Series got off to a hot start Wednesday.

Mackenzie Mettille, who starred at Canfield High School and Mount Union, tied the course record in winning the opening week.

He covered the 3K course at the Ward Athletic Complex in 8 minutes, 55 seconds, to match Josh Boggs’ course mark. Mettille finished 53 seconds ahead of runner-up Luke Warrick, a Beaver Local junior.

Mettille vowed he will break the record next year. He is unable to attend the week three race, when it is held on the 3K course again.

Beaver Local senior Hannah Ruberto was the top female in 11:58.

The series attracted its largest first-week field since 2019. There were 158 runners registered with 149 finishers.

The second race will be held on the 5K course next Wednesday, Aug. 6.
