WEIRTON, W.Va. — It wasn’t a replay.

With its season on the line, the Weir baseball team shook off a slow start against Hancock County rival Oak Glen as the Red Riders erupted for nine runs in the third inning en route to an 11-1 victory in five innings in a West Virginia Class AA Region 1 Section 1 elimination game on a windy and rainy Thursday evening at home.

“We got off to a little bit of a slow start,” Weir (12-15) head coach Dave Cowden said. “We had the big inning in the third. We timed up their pitcher, we put the bat on the ball and we were aggressive on the bases.

“Alex Zanieski threw less than 50 pitchers. We can bring him back later in the week. Jerzee McAllister came in and threw strikes, and we made the plays behind him.

“It was a good performance by everybody involved. We played good defense. We were aggressive on the bases. It was a good game by everybody. It was a total team effort.”

With the win, Weir will play North Marion at 5:30 p.m. today at home in another elimination game.

“We have a plan for our pitchers,” Cowden said. “We have pitchers set up for tomorrow. We have kids who can pitch. Cook will be available to pitch Saturday. Zanieski will be available to pitch Saturday.

“We did not have G Cross today. He sprained his ankle in our last game, and he wasn’t here. We hope to get him back later in the week.”

The Golden Bears played solid early on as the game was tied going into the bottom of the third inning, however, the wheels ultimately came off for the visitors.

“It got away from us,” Oak Glen (4-20) head coach Eric Hayden said. “We hurt ourselves. We made six errors. We did not make the plays in the field when we had the opportunity. The game just got away from us.”

The game was scoreless after one, and it was tied at one after two. Neither team scored in the fourth, and after keeping the boys in blue off the scoreboard in the fifth, the Red and Black plated an unearned run in the fifth to end the game.

The game was third between the two rivals this season with both teams winning on their home field. The Golden Bears beat the Red Riders in the first game of the season, while Weir turned the tables with an 11-1 victory in five innings April 24. Oak Glen collected two hits and committed eight errors in that loss as the boys in white tallied six runs in the fourth to break that game open.

“It’s survive and advance,” Cowden said.

Both teams used two pitchers.

Alex Zanieski started on the mound and ended up picking up the win for Weir. He struck out five and walked one in three innings of work. Jerzee McAllister came on in relief to start the fourth, and he pitched the final two innings. McAllister struck out two and walked one.

Noah Willey started and took the loss for Oak Glen. Willey struck out two and walked two in his 2 1/3 innings of work on the mound. He was replaced during the third inning by Ty Patterson, who pitched the rest of the way. Patterson struck out two and walked one.

The victors recorded seven hits in the win. Two of the seven hits went for extra bases.

Individually, Colson Kimmel collected a two-run double, Teddy Glyptis tallied an RBI double and Damir Mowder delivered a two-run single. Also, Zanieski singled home a run, Lucas McAllister, Trae Cook and Nico Glass all delivered a single, and Liam Williamson produced a pair of RBI.

The Golden Bears were only able to muster a pair of hits in the game. Tyler McKay and Maddox McKay collected back-to-back base hits in the second before Josh Maher brought Tyler home with a groundout to short.

Oak Glen appeared to score the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the top of the first, however, Willey was called out to end the inning. The Golden Bears broke through with a run in second, and could have been up 2-0 instead of just 1-0.

“I thought we scored at the plate in the first, but it didn’t go our way,” Hayden said. “We moved on, and our pitcher battled. We were still in the game at that point. It was 1-1 in the third. We just missed some opportunities to make plays in the field. The game got away from us in the third.”

The game was the final one for Oak Glen’s five seniors — Tyler McKay, Robbie Carter, Preston Cole, Jaylen Cowart and Patterson.

“These seniors have meant a ton to the program,” Hayden said. “They won a sectional title. They came mountains from where they started. They have meant a lot to this program. When they came in, people said this group wouldn’t do anything, but they have done mountains. They exceeded expectations. I am proud of everything they have done and accomplished.”
