Blue Devils trap Bears

Morning Journal/Matt Morrison Lisbon’s Hunter Dailey goes to the basket against Oak Glen’s Mason Kell and AJ Ramgeet.

LISBON–The Lisbon boys basketball team is nearing the end of its regular season and the Blue Devils are staying sharp as proved by its 63-43 win over Oak Glen 63-43 on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils are working on the specifics as they will have one more matchup before they face Columbiana in a game that will determine the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference championship.

“I wanted to work on a little bit more execution in the second half, but it is hard in games like this when you have a big lead,” Lisbon coach Chris Huckshold said. “Kids know that subs are coming, but the first half we executed well and changed defenses. We did a great job I was really happy with how we played.”

The offensive execution was steady as the Blue Devils went on a 17-5 run in the second quarter that gave the team a 42-14 lead at halftime.

Lisbon honored its seniors before the contest and for twins Austin and Hunter Dailey it marks a four year career that the twins have played not only basketball together, but football as well.

“Playing four years with my brother (Austin) there is nothing better,” Hunter Dailey said. “Ever since we were little we have always dreamed of being able to show off our skills and play for the community together.”

“It is honestly great,” Austin Dailey said. “He has been my best friend for 17 years and I wouldn’t want to change that for anything.”

Hunter Dailey dominated inside the paint that gave the Blue Devils huge advantages, including a layup at the 2:13 mark in the third quarter that handed the Blue Devils a 54-24 lead. Austin Dailey hit a couple of three pointers, including one at the 1:54 mark in the first quarter that extended a 18-6 run.

Senior Trevor Siefke led the Blue Devils with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Hunter Dailey had 12 points and eight rebounds. Luke Kraft added nine points and nine rebounds. Austin Dailey chipped in six points and two steals, while senior Tate Wallen had six points and five assists.

Oak Glen entered the game on a two-game win streak, but an early dry spell put the Golden Bears behind quick.

“We just couldn’t get shots to fall early and against a really good team you can’t do that,” Oak Glen coach Jerry Everly said. “We came out here on senior night and (Lisbon) was ready to play. We have high school kids that come out and do the best they can and sometimes shots don’t fall and that is kind of where we were at tonight.”

Lisbon coach Chris Huckshold had the opportunity to coach against his nephew, Oak Glen’s A.J. Ramgeet.

“It is fun,” Huckshold said. “I coach him in travel ball and it was cool to play against him last year and this year. It makes a fun family discussion.”

Alex Dennis led the Golden Bears with seven points, while Ramgeet and Tyler Evans each had six points.

Lisbon will host Cornerstone Christian in a Div. IV sectional opener on Feb. 27 but the Blue Devils will focus on the final two games of the season first.

“We are worried about Academy of Urban Scholars and Columbiana right now,” Huckshold said. “Tournament is in the future.”

Oak Glen won the jayvee game 52-37.

Will Weekley had 18 points to lead the Golden Bears.

Alex Brown led the Blue Devils with 20 points.

Lisbon will host the Academy for Urban Scholars on Monday.

Oak Glen will host North Marion on Saturday.
