Courtney gets kick out of All-Ohio berth

COLUMBUS — United sophomore Luke Courtney’s talent jumps out at you.

Courtney, on his way to becoming one of the top kickers in the state, was named to the Division VI All-Ohio high school football Monday as selected by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

He received second-team honors after going 4-for-4 on field goals, including a school-record 44-yarder, and converting 35-of-38 extra-point kicks. He also had 15 touchbacks.

Courtney was one of many standouts on the Golden Eagles, who went 8-2 and captured their second straight Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title.

Courtney caught six passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while making 19 tackles and breaking up three passes as a defensive back.

Sebring senior twins Noah and Elijah Frederick also received All-Ohio honors.

Noah Frederick was named to the Division VII second team as a running back and Elijah Frederick received third-team honors as a punter.

Both excelled despite Sebring’s 1-8 record.

Noah Frederick ran for 1,569 yards and 10 touchdowns on 162 carries (9.7) had six catches for 113 yards (18.8) and one touchdown, was 3-of-3 passing for 64 yards and a touchdown and scored 76 points.

Elijah Frederick averaged 42.6 yards on 23 punts, including a 71-yarder and eight inside the 20-yard line. He was the second-leading rusher with 818 yards and four touchdowns on 101 carries (8.1).

Six other area players received honorable mention — United senior defensive lineman Payne Brereton and United sophomore offensive lineman Dallas McCracken in Division VI and Southern Local junior running back Colton Soukup, Southern Local junior linebacker Wyatt Morris, Leetonia senior linebacker Mike Miller and Wellsville senior offensive lineman Tyler Stanley in Division VII.

Brereton collected 37 tackles with nine sacks and seven more for losses.

McCracken graded out at 93 percent and led the team with 48 pancakes.

Soukup totaled 1,039 yards rushing with 15 touchdowns on only 58 carries, an average of 17.9 yards per attempt. He also had six catches for 121 yards (20.2) and two touchdowns.

Morris had a team-high 103 tackles, including 68 solos, 17 for losses with seven sacks.

Miller topped the Bears in tackles with 73 total in seven games. He had 42 first hits with five tackles for loss.

Stanley graded out around 90 percent every week for the Tigers.

The Division IV and V All-Ohio teams will be announced today.
