Lost gold mines

Editor: The teardown of the oldest commercial buildings, now 220 years old, in the state of Ohio would be sacrilege. Those buildings were deeded March 23, 1805, one day following Thomas Jefferson receiving the final payment from Lewis Kinney for the land to be known as New Lisbon, Ohio. Tearing them down would result in the loss of an entire half block of Lisbon’s downtown. Who doesn’t awe at the archway half-way up that block? Editor: This mess we have with North Korea dramatically illustrates what can happen when politicians get involved in fighting wars. After World War II, Joseph Stalin demanded that the entire peninsula of Korea come under Soviet influence. Upon the urging of our State Department, influenced by the Communist Alger Hiss, we compromised and divided the peninsula into North Korea and South Korea. Editor: Last week, East Liverpool Chief John Lane announced that the city had received the state DART grant for $50,000 over the next two years. The city is to be congratulated on this achievement, and now have the ability to provide help to the many in the area suffering from drug addiction. Josh Lytle certainly is extending the support of his program as there has been a significant increase in the number of drug overdoses over the past several years. Editor: I enjoy the written word — and I think that the editors and writers for this newspaper never get the recognition that they deserve. I read the article written by Mr. Tom Giambroni covering the ceremony for Sept. 11 held in Wellsville on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017. He did an excellent job and I wish that I could have shared the experience but, silly me, I thought the ceremony would have been held on the actual day of the tragedy. Editor: Everywhere we turn, whether it be TV, internet or newspapers, the drug abuse epidemic is discussed. Substance abuse costs our nation approximately $600 billion annually. Some 24.6 million Americans, 9.4 percent of the population, abuse drugs. That is an 8 percent increase since 2002. As for spending, $12.54 billion is spent on treatment and $9.4 billion for law enforcement. Only 1.34 billion is spent on prevention. Editor: During the Vietnam War Navy personnel served in the offshore waters on battle stations providing continuous naval gunfire support, search and rescue, and aircraft carrier support and protection.
