Hopes and prayers

Editor: I had a friend who was in her 20s. She was diagnosed with acute leukemia. She had two young children. She read everything she could find about the disease. Her prognosis — she would be dead within a year. It wasn’t even quite a year and back at The Ohio State University Hospital, the latest test showed she was out of remission. Out of desperation, she and her family prayed a desperate prayer. Things changed. She was miraculously cured. Since the OSU hospital was a research hospital, she had to go back every year for a checkup. I said to her, “If every test is always ...

Road to recovery is paved with hope

Editor: The news has so often covered the issues of drug addiction, overdoses, heroin and drug epidemic etc., that we have become weary of hearing any more on a daily basis. I feel it is equally important, and if not more important to address what is happening here in this county, and throughout the area and region. Recovery is taking place. And, you may need to be reminded as to how it is taking place. Every time you read in the local paper that someone was either drunk or under the influence of something, let me tell you that there are a number of more individuals who have risen ...

Nutty news judgment

Editor: I have a suggestion for the layout of the newspaper. I have seen this numerous times, but it hit home more recently and I feel the need and desire to speak on behalf of all family members and the honored themselves. For whatever reason murderers, rapists, pedophiles, drug addicts, drug dealers and whatever wrong lifestyle is lived makes the front page with what appears to be full detail about their poor decisions and choices. I recently submitted a photo and brief biography of a decorated military airman. The day his article was printed a huge picture of a squirrel eating ...

Traffic scams

Editor On Dec. 5, I was the lucky recipient of a Liverpool Township speeding ticket. I was unaware of such infraction until about a week later when I received a ticket in the mail. I never saw the presence of any officer or patrol car. I am not even sure where the violation occurred. When I was younger (I am 51) police were to serve and protect. Part of this service was a visible presence to deter crime, slow speeding traffic and interact with the community. Not anymore. Somewhere on Route 7 an officer hides behind some structure to shoot a vehicle from behind. I was provided a ...

Minds made up

Editor: I used to teach a lesson to my government students on propaganda in our society and how to recognize it. A part of politics is trying to change public opinion to shape it in certain ways and propaganda plays a big part in that. Pressure groups try to influence public opinion in order to win what they want. Currently right wing television (Fox News) and radio talk show hosts (Rush Limbaugh and Mark Lavin) want President Trump to fire Robert Mueller over Trumped up charges. Robert Mueller is a Republican, a war veteran, with an impeccable record for getting the facts ...

Imagine, it could happen here

Editor: Lately the local school systems have wisely, in my opinion, started discussions on ways to address the issue of firearm security. Sadly, in the world we now live in there are deranged cowards who chose to take their problems out on innocent people of all walks of life. The one thing these tragedies seem to have in common is that most of them involve gun violence in places where people are vulnerable and helpless. Every day we send our children to a place where there is very little or no protection against this type of danger … that is their school. All public buildings ...
