Move on

Editor: Hillary Clinton has been whining since election night two years ago that she was cheated when she lost to Trump. She thrust her arms in the air, and with her weeping supporters, still try to convince the public to sympathize with her as she screeches “Foul.” Let’s just think about this for one moment. She and her supporters claim they won the popular vote and should therefore have won the election. But wait a second, if you will, to see if she has solid ground to stand upon. The founders of this country set the rules when they drafted the Constitution. Since then, for ...

Penny wise, pound foolish

Editor: For the past two years, I have been a devoted volunteer at the Columbiana County Dog Pound. I was born and raised in Lisbon and felt good giving back to this community. All I ever wanted to do was walk puppies and help out. During that time, I came to know several other volunteers who shared the same goals and dreams as I have for making the pound a better place. About a year ago, we formed a group to promote adoptions and raise money to help improve the pounds worn out facilities. We called our group Friends of Columbiana County Pound Dogs. Last Christmas we walked the ...

Called out

Editor: The Nov. 24 issue of The Morning Journal contained the headline, “Worker reprimanded over sign incident.” I remember being surprised and then upset that it was the county employee who was the one being reprimanded. Perhaps a quick recap would be helpful. A county employee, using a county vehicle, was photographed picking up campaign signs for county Commissioner Mike Halleck. But what I’m wondering is — why wasn’t Mr. Halleck the one who was reprimanded?? It is illegal to have county employees do your campaign work for you — even “off the clock.” And, yes, ...

Get out the vote

Editor: Finally, just when it looked like Republicans would control the House of Representatives for 40 years (much like the Democrats had) a blue wave came crashing down. How could everything go so wrong for the GOP? Well, for one thing, the drawing of lines for Congressional districts became a function of the judicial system in some states. Curiously, Dems found no problem when they drew the lines favorable to their party while they were in control of legislatures. Nancy Pelosi will now be able to make the next two years a plague for President Trump. Maybe they will launch 50 or ...

Dollars and sense

Editor: The Democrats don’t want to give Trump $5 billion for the wall. But, they gave Obama $150 billion to give to Iran. Make sense? John Arnette East Liverpool

Civic pride

Editor: What a whirlwind it was. Now that the dust has settled on Election 2018, I look back with appreciation for all I learned and observed about our government and legislative process. The voter turnout was great — over 10 percent increase from the 2014 midterm election. That is something our county can be proud of. We need, however, to put that into perspective that we had only 50 percent voter turnout. There is still work to be done for all of us to realize that our vote is our voice. In the hundreds of conversations I had with people throughout our county, some said “I ...
