‘Winning isn’t everything’

To the editor: I attended the Salem - United Varsity Baseball game Thursday (May 11) at Salem’s impressive facility on F.E. Cope Drive. It was a beautiful night and the game was exciting. Salem won by a run. United, with a district enrollment about half that of Salem’s, put up a valiant effort. High school athletics, properly coached and supervised, teaches participants sportsmanship and character. The other night, Salem displayed little of either. To the editor: I worked for 48 years paying into Social Security and Medicare, earning these essential benefits for retirement and aging well in the community I helped build. This is Older Americans month that highlights the programming and systems we as a people created to support aging well. Applauds process used by trustees, commissioners

To the editor: I firmly believe in a landowner’s right to make decisions for their own property until those decisions lower their neighbor’s property values, destroy their neighbor’s quality of life and ability to sell their property if desired. The current process that the township trustees and the county commissioners are using to restrict or approve windmills and solar projects in townships protects landowner rights and citizens of our community, and I applaud them for their actions. Norfolk Southern should be buying residential properties

To the editor: It is a common understanding in the retail industry that “if you break it, you buy it.” That same principle applies to a community destroyed by a reckless corporation as well as a community broken by a careless customer. The overdue bill owed by Norfolk Southern for its wanton destruction of East Palestine is a hefty one that far exceeds the $387 million claimed lost in its 1st Quarter Report on the “Eastern Ohio Incident.” However, not a dollar has been paid so far to directly compensate property owners for their colossal loss of value. ‘Pennies for Paws’ helps Humane Society

To the editor: A million. Pretty big number. Even a half-million! But that is how many pennies our wonderful elementary students of Columbiana County collected for the Humane Society in the first annual ‘Pennies for Paws” last year. By the way, $5,000, if you’re still moving the decimal point. This year’s drive is up and running and we’re hoping for even more.
