— Officers responded to the 800 block of Granite Avenue at 2:56 p.m. Friday for a reported barking dog complaint. Officers spoke with the resident and observed two dogs inside the house that only began barking when officers knocked at the door. Officers spoke with the homeowner advising them of the complaint.
— Officers spoke with a woman at the police department at 1:31 p.m. Friday regarding a text message they received. The text message had a phone number and stated her number. Officers advised the woman it may have just been an accidental message. The woman advised they blocked the number.
— Officers spoke with a woman at the police department at 1:16 p.m. Friday regarding a theft that occurred at Fernangles Tavern in October. Officers were advised that an employee had been caught stealing money from the business, but the money had since been paid back and the employee fired. The caller advised that the person has also been speaking negatively about her and the business.
— Officers responded to the 100 block of West Eighth Street at 1:03 p.m. Friday for a report of a dog that’s lead is allowing the dog to go into the alleyway. Officers spoke with the dog owner who advised she would fix the problem.
— Officers responded to the intersection of East State Street and North Broadway Avenue for a report of an unoccupied truck parked in the roadway. Officers located a pickup truck on North Broadway Avenue and spoke with the occupants who advised they stopped briefly to load some furniture into the truck and were preparing to depart just as officers arrived.
— Officers responded to the area of Westview Avenue and Sunset Boulevard at 11:16 a.m. Friday for a report of power lines down in the roadway. The fire department responded and the intersection was shut down. Ohio Edison responded to fix the lines and pole.
— Officers responded to the 900 block of Liberty Street at 2:11 a.m. Friday for a reported verbal dispute. The caller advised her live-in boyfriend was upset because she turned the wi-fi off and threatened to throw his phone at her. Officers spoke to the man who advised he knew his rights and didn’t want to talk to officers. The caller advised she was going to try to go to a friend’s house for the night.
— Officers responded to the 800 block of East State Street at 11:49 p.m. Thursday for a report of suspicious activity. The caller advised that his camera had picked up a man pulling a wagon with packages in it. Officers checked the surrounding area but were unable to locate him.
— Officers responded to the 500 block of New Garden Avenue at 8:16 p.m. Thursday for a report of a suspicious person. A security guard advised that a man in the parking lot across the street had hit a car. Officers spoke with the man who advised that he was skateboarding and kicked his own car.
— Officers responded to the Salem West Medical Facility at 7:18 p.m. Thursday to assist EMT with a man that made comments about harming himself. Officers stood by until no longer needed.
— Officers responded to the 1000 block of Cleveland Street at 5:44 p.m. Thursday for a reported burglary in progress. Officers found a man being held down on the ground by the caller and after some investigation it was determined the man, Kaleb Messersmith, 23, had forced entry into the home after being told he was not welcome multiple times. During the altercation the caller was attempting to get Messersmith out of the house and was punched in the process, successfully detaining him until officers arrived.
— Officers responded to the 200 block of East Sixth Street at 5:49 p.m. Thursday for a report of a suspicious person. The caller advised that there was a juvenile waving a stick at another juvenile in the alley. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the source of the complaint.
— Officers spoke to a person at the police department at 4:06 p.m. Thursday for a report of a possible assault on a juvenile. Officers were shown a video of the incident and an investigation is pending.
— Officers responded to a business in the 2800 block of East State Street at 2:47 p.m. Thursday for a report of shoplifting. The caller advised a person, whose name was not listed, had attempted to take multiple items from the store without paying for them. Officers reviewed footage from the store’s video cameras, observing the person attempt to leave with the items before being stopped by loss prevention. Officers advised the person who would be charged with theft and that he would receive a summons with a court date.
— The school resource officer was advised of an issue with pickup of a student by school administration at 1:22 p.m. Thursday. The issue regards the student’s mother and boyfriend and who picks up and drops off the student, and that the boyfriend is not to pick up or drop off the student without proper paperwork.
— The school resource officer was advised of an issue that occurred the day prior at 1:21 p.m. Thursday. School administration and the officer spoke with the student in question and the matter is being addressed and under investigation.
— The school resource officer was advised of an issue with a student’s statements on social media about another student at 11:50 a.m. Thursday. School administrators advised that the student was suspended and the matter is under investigation.
— The school resource officer was advised by a student and his mother of an incident that occurred with another student in October at 11:50 p.m. Thursday. They advised the student had made some statements about an unknown issue between the two. Both just wanted the matter to be documented in case there was any issue in the future.
— Officers responded to the 200 block of Rose Avenue at 11:46 a.m. Thursday for a wellness check. Officers were advised that the caller was on the phone with the person in question when they told someone to “get their hands off them.” Officers spoke with the person in question who advised it was a misunderstanding and she was talking to one of her young juveniles. The person was advised that everything was okay.
— Officers responded to the 1000 block of East Fourth Street at 11:03 a.m. Thursday for a reported vicious dog complaint. Officers located the dog which was on the owner’s property. Officers spoke with the owner who advised he was having issues with the dog and working to fix them. The caller advised that he was new to the city and officers explained the city’s dog ordinances.
— Officers were referred a report of alleged juvenile abuse in the city by Columbiana County Children’s Services at 10:46 a.m. Thursday. Officers advised the matter would be looked into.
— Officers responded to the 300 block of Continental Drive at 7:55 p.m. Thursday for a littering complaint. The caller advised that someone had dumped clothing on their property. Officers checked the items and found no identifiers on them, disposing of them at the police department.
— Officers spoke with a man by phone at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday regarding a civil matter. The caller advised that the landlord was parking in his parking spot. The caller advised that he was already in contact with an attorney but needed a report on file.
— Officers responded to the 600 block of East Fourth Street at 3:36 p.m. Wednesday for a civil matter. Officers were advised of damage done to the property by the tenant but nothing criminal had occurred.
— Officers responded to the 100 block of West State Street at 2:31 p.m. Wednesday to assist an agent from the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force with an arrest. The person in question, whose name was not listed, was found to also have an active warrant for their arrest from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The person was turned over to a state trooper.
— Officers responded to a business in the 2800 block of East State Street at 8:56 a.m. Wednesday for a report of theft. Officers spoke with loss prevention, as well as witnesses, and determined the man had left with two vacuum cleaners without paying before fleeing the area in a black vehicle. Officers were able to identify the person via video footage and assistance from witnesses. Charges are pending.
— Officers responded to the area of Waterworth Memorial Park at 8:05 a.m. Wednesday for a report of suspicious activity. The caller advised that while they were walking it appeared someone was attempting to take a picnic table. Officers located the table which appeared to be moved but undamaged, and the table was moved off the walking path.
— Officers responded to the 600 block of East Fourth Street at 12:41 p.m. Tuesday for a dispute between a tenant and landlord. Both parties gave a similar account of what had transpired. The tenant had chanced the oil on a vehicle and had left the pan in the yard, and the landlord requested it be moved multiple times in the last several days, so their pet dogs did not get into it, and the tenant found the oil pan missing that day leading to an argument. Prior to officer’s arrival the landlord had already advised the tenant that the pan had been moved into the garage. Both parties expressed frustration with the other for yelling and statements made. Officers suggested they avoid each other and contact officers, if necessary, should further issues develop.
— Officers responded to the 1000 block of North Ellsworth Avenue at 12:06 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a suspicious man going door to door in the area. Officers located the man on West Ninth Street and identified him. The man was soliciting for the window company that employs him, and officers advised him that this required a soliciting permit which the individuals had been unaware of.
— Officers spoke with a woman at the police department at 9:52 a.m. Tuesday for a report of fraud. The woman advised that while using her iPad someone unknown to her had obtained all her personal information. The caller advised they were not out any money and that she had already canceled her bank account. Officers advised her to monitor her accounts and her mail to look for any new fraudulent accounts she did not start.
— Officers responded to the 900 block of East State Street at 8:37 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a reckless operator. The caller advised that a vehicle had driven around a school bus while the stop lights were activated. Officers checked video from the school which showed the vehicle passing the school bus while the yellow caution lights were activated. The vehicle was midway past the bus when the stop lights were activated.
