Execution of search warrant at Leetonia home leads to soft lockdown at school

LISBON — Suspected narcotics and a firearm were found Thursday morning during the execution of a search warrant within a half mile from the Leetonia K-12 campus, triggering a brief soft lockdown of the facility.

According to Jesse Smith, director of the Columbiana County Drug Task Force, no arrests followed the police action.

At 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Leetonia police were stationed at the Leetonia K-12 campus building, which was in a “precautionary soft lockdown” while drug agents were located at 38664 Butcher Road.

Neither Pete Davis or Jessica Cross were taken into custody during the police action in which agents discovered scales, packaging materials, a 22-caliber long rifle and 55 grams of suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine, as well as scales and packaging materials used for possible trafficking.

Charges against those individuals may be pending based on crime lab test results, Smith said.

He added that such lockdowns are not uncommon at locations like schools when execution of a search warrant is occurring within close proximity.

Leetonia school officials had notified the community of the “precautionary soft lockdown” shortly after on the district’s official Facebook page.

“Out of an abundance of caution, and in collaboration with law enforcement, we initiated a soft lockdown to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff,” the post read, detailing how learning did continue as normal but movement within the building was restricted during the exercise down the street with help from village police.

“We are grateful for the prompt response and ongoing partnership with our local law enforcement in helping us navigate this situation safely,” the post concluded. “The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority, and we will always act with caution and care,” school officials concluded in the online communication.
