STHS Museum first floor refurbishment

In July 1987, the dream of the Springfield Township Historical Society to have a building to use as a meeting place and museum became a reality when it purchased the Knights of Pythias Hall (built in 1860) on state Route 170 in Petersburg. Many structural improvements and cosmetic changes were made to make it into a museum at that time.

Now, 39 years later, the STHS Museum has undergone a cleaning, re-organization, and refurbishment of the first floor. This floor is used for meetings, and monthly speaker events, but also displays a plethora of local historical items, photographs, memorabilia, etc. which have been cleaned and arranged. What was once a kitchen has been remodeled and will be used as a “library” where visitors will be able to do research once the collection of documents are organized and archived.

The second floor showcases the history of the three villages that make up Springfield Township – New Middletown, Petersburg, and New Springfield. It also houses information and artifacts of the local schools of the township. The second floor is slated next for cleaning and re-organization later this year.

The public is encouraged to visit the museum Sunday, May 3, when the first speaker of the “Afternoon at the Museum” speaker series for 2026 will be Dave Long whose topic will be “Senior Targets: What seniors can do to avoid becoming the target of scammers.”

The STHS museum opens at 1:30 p.m., program starts at 2 p.m. This program is free and open to everyone. The museum is at 14188 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, (state Route 170). For information visit them on Facebook or at springfieldtwphistory@gmail.com.
