East Palestine School District to seek continuous earned income tax in November

EAST PALESTINE — The East Palestine School District is asking voters to approve a new 1 percent continuous earned income tax levy this November.

The board of education passed a resolution during this month’s regular meeting to place the levy on the general election ballot.

According to the resolution the district “has determined that the current revenues available to the School District will be insufficient to provide for the necessary requirements of the school district and that it is necessary to levy an additional school district income tax.”

The tax would be levied on the earned income of people living in the district for a continued period of time and would go toward the district’s operating expenses.

The resolution also authorizes the district treasurer to request from the Ohio Tax Commissioner the amount of revenue that would be generated from the levy annually.

In other matters, the board also approved a reduction in force of the community liaison position, which affects Michael Demster, who currently holds that position.

According to the resolution authorizing the reduction, the position was reduced due to reorganization of administrative and operational responsibilities.

Another reduction in force approved by the board was for the elementary school library aide position held by Lara Buelow.

This reduction was the result of financial forecast restrains, according to the resolution.

The board also approved several athletic supplemental contracts, non-renewal of several supplemental contracts for the conclusion of the 2025-26 school year, a memorandum of understanding with the Counseling Center for student support and prevention services as needed, an agreement with the Columbiana County Educational Service Center for services, and several students through open enrollment.

Also approved was a new three year administrative contract for Deseree Stredney, as assistant to the treasurer, and a three year administrative contract for Rick Shepas, in the position of Director of Workforce Development.

The next meeting was set for 6 p.m. July 13.

Starting at $3.75/week.
