Trial slated for man accused in baseball bat attack

LISBON — Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam set the jury trial for March 30 in the case against a Columbiana man accused of attacking a woman with a baseball bat last year.

Frederick L. Harroff, 66, last known address Columbiana Lisbon Road, appeared before Washam Monday for a status hearing, accompanied by his defense attorney, T. Robert Bricker. He was in the custody of deputies from the sheriff’s office. He remains held without bond after stipulating to the prosecution wanting his $500,000 cash or surety bond revoked due to violations.

Harroff was indicted last year for charges of first-degree felony attempted murder, first-degree felony aggravated arson, first-degree felony kidnapping, second-degree felonies of aggravated arson and two counts of felonious assault and fourth-degree felony strangulation.

According to an affidavit filed in county Municipal Court, Harroff allegedly repeatedly attacked the woman with a heavy wooden baseball bat over her head and body while she was lying in bed, causing severe physical harm on June 2, 2025 in Fairfield Township.

One of the aggravated arson charges dealt with him allegedly trying to harm the woman and the other dealt with allegedly trying to harm the property.

A final status hearing was set at 2 p.m. Feb. 27. The state was represented by county Assistant Prosecutor Alec Beech.

A hearing in a separate case remains set for 10 a.m. Feb. 13 before Common Pleas Court Judge Megan Bickerton. Harroff was served in January with a new indictment for menacing by stalking and attempted intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness in a criminal case, both fourth-degree felonies.

According to the indictment, the menacing charge stems from Harroff allegedly engaging in a pattern of conduct causing another to believe he would cause them harm from Sept. 3, 2025 to Dec. 4, 2025. The attempted intimidation stems from an attempt of alleged intimidation on Dec. 4, 2025.

Bond in that case was set at $100,000 cash or surety and he was ordered to have no contact with the victim or any state witnesses. Bricker was assigned to represent him also in the new case.

In the motion to revoke bond, Beech cited multiple dates when the defendant, while in jail, wrote to the victim starting Sept. 4, 2025. The addressee and return address were altered, but the contents clearly indicated the letter was from the defendant and intended for the victim. The jail personnel started monitoring his mail in an effort to prevent future contacts with the victim. A second letter was sent to the victim on Sept. 12, 2025. On Dec. 5, 2025, the prosecution was notified that jail staff seized two additional letters before they left the jail.

Harroff was recently found competent to stand trial for the attempted murder case.
