‘Pizzeria’ is the winning word for Lisbon spelling bee

LISBON — After seven rounds, Lisbon Exempted Village Schools has three spellers to send to the Columbiana County Spelling Bee March 7 at Beaver Local Schools Auditorium.  

The spelling bee held Friday afternoon in the auditorium of Lisbon David Anderson Jr/Sr high School began with 40 students.  

During the first round of spelling, 20 students were eliminated. The second round saw 14 more students eliminated. During the third round none of the remaining six students spelled correctly and competed again in round 4. Rounds five and six were between the top two students, Kolton Casey, eighth grade, and Callie Hayes, fifth, to determine the winner, which ended up being Kolton who spelled the winning word “pizzeria” correctly.  

Callie was named the second-place finisher.  

A seventh round was held for the remaining four of the top six finishers — Braidon Davison, seventh grade; Sadie Deprill, eighth grade; Ayden Gregg, sixth grade; and Naomi Light, eighth grade — to find the third-place winner, Sadie Deprill.

The school did not select an alternate.  

The moderator for the spelling bee was Lisbon Elementary School Principal Dan Kemats.  

The judges were Madison Daugherty, teacher; Sheri Bobeck, Columbiana County Educational Service Center consultant; and Maddy Wrask, teacher.  

For his win, Kolton will receive a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card, a $25 Amazon gift card and a one-year subscription to Britannica Online for Kids.  

Callie will receive a $35 Amazon gift card and a one-year subscription to Britannica Online for Kids.
